Title: Reusing boiler water
Post by: robertj1 on January 30, 2016, 10:13:55 AM
Was thinking about draining boiler this summer. No problems. Just to check if there is any sludge bottom. Maybe pressure washer the insides of water jacket out. It has been 4 years running. Question is, has anybody reused water. Pumped it through a real fine filter while draining and filling. Have always kept boiler treatment up to 1000. Used soft water when I filled it. Water looks crystal clear.

How many gallons is your boiler?  I just don't see all the hassle.  If you have a open system, treatment will not be over $150 dollars.  Dump it.. add new water.

I’ve wondered about that, wonder how good boiler water is for the environment if its treated properly?

I’m not a huge green weenie or anything but we do have a state park right across the road and they regularly take water samples.

His boiler holds 325 gallons and would require 7 quarts of treatment if refilling using the factory treatment. (should get it to around 1500 ppm)
It would be around $140 to replace it.

If at least some of the treatment is 4 years old, I would just dump it and replace with new stuff. Some people recommend replacing it after 5 years.

Does the boiler treatment degrade over time. Was concerned about dumping on the ground.

Glad mine only holds about 150 gallons or so. I dump mine every year but it only requires a 1/2 gallon of treatmen at about $20. Makes me feel better anyway.
