Title: Looking for a new boiler - replace CB2400
Post by: Corneroffice on September 01, 2016, 09:07:55 AM
Hey All,
I currently have a Central Boiler 2400, which has developed a leak in the water jacket.
Several attempts from a welder to fix have not been successful. The water jacket is paper thin which is an absolute design flaw that CB knows of but will do nothing for me as Im the 2nd owner. The unit is 8 years old, they have a 25 yr warranty - to the original owner.  I understand it is what it is, however they basically laughed at me when I called... and said, here is what others have done. So its a known issue and they can hide behind the language in their warranty rather then doing whats best for their customers. I was looking for them to work with me, not replace the unit. I asked what if I traded up? laughed, we dont have a program... so CB is now in my rear view window and I need to find a replacement. Rant Over.

I live in Central NH, heat an 1800sqft home and DHW and need to plan for a future 800-1000 sqft garage.
Burn seasoned hard wood, minimal pine.

Im looking for some input on units that have been proven and if there has been an issue the manufacture is willing to work with you on a fix.
thanks for any input

and if anyone is looking for a CB2400 project boiler, let me know as its likly headed to the scrap yard.

Jody

You would want too look and see what is phase 2 compliant also, that will narrow down your choice.

Look into the Wood Master CleanFire. They meet the EPA requirements through 2020! www.woodmaster.com

I am running a empyre pro 400 in Gilford NH heating 8000 sf and really like it.  They also have a pro 200 for smaller applications.  PM me if you would like to see it.

Empyre is out of business. Is P&M phase 2 compliant? I have seen no indication it is. Hawken is in bankruptcy. Some other Mfg. are having  issues with corrosion in mild steel fireboxes as you have had. Look for stainless firebox and a sound company that will stand behind their unit. I'd at least check with Slim.

Seems the environment in a gasser is especially harmful to mild steel.

Interesting that central boiler just came out with a stainless edge model. After bashing other mfg. for using stainless, looks like they are admitting they have a problem. question is - will they back their warranty on those units any better than what they have done in the past on mild steel units?

The only company I would take a serious look at is a heatmaster. I am a little bias since I own one but I had a hardy h4 before this which was 23 years old. It was also stainless and ran fine but wasn't efficient in the least. I bought Richards g200 show boiler last year. The company is awesome, they are actually doing some updates on the boilers to handle a couple issues that they think the boilers might run into at no charge to the owners. Ever heard of that from a boiler company?

Seems to be the only one with a warranty also!

I’ve met Jake and Wally in person from Heatmaster so far at dealer meetings at out local distributor’s, absolutely awesome people. I need to talk em into investing in some farm land down here so I can farm it for em. ;)

And yah, I have last years model G400, it now has been updated to this years standard design, gratis.

Marty, Richard hasn't made it around to me yet as far as updates. Are you talking about the factory payed for updates or something else? What did the updates end up being?

Stabilize the curtain retainer in the firebox and put on a air cooler on exhaust blower. Should make blower motors last longer. Just looking out for their customers.

Stabilize brick retainer? What brick? I heard possibly cutting the air curtain bottom mounting bracket.

that's right, had a brain dead moment. I'll reword it and see if that looks better.

Scott Sloan from Heartland Distributing did the blower update and I had already cut the lower curtain retaining angle.

The blower update really isn’t that a big a deal to do, but you need the proper templates to know where to cut.

I would also chime in a vote for Heatmaster. Having owned three brands of furnaces I can easily tell you that this one is the best.First furnace worked pretty good, but took a lot of wood, second furnace I was never happier to see something go down the road, the Heatmaster easily conserves on wood compared to the other two, plus it handles the job of heating much better, and is very simple to run.
