Has anyone tried building there own solar hot water collector?

I’m seriously looking into carrying the vacuum tube solar collectors. Most home made ones only work really well when facing the sun full on with zero clouds. If your just looking into taking the chill off the well water before it enters the water heater they work well enough, not so much on a cloudy day when it’s zero out.
