Title: Input on New Boiler
Post by: pete3046 on August 20, 2017, 05:28:27 AM
Hello,
we are moving to a old 1720, house w/ around 3,100sf to heat. House was updated to included forced air heat/ac around 2000 and also some insulation. There is also a small, 1000sf cottage that requires heat as well. Location is NE CT and we are looking at wood boilers. The two I'm looking at are Central Boiler Classic edge 750 and the Heat Master G200. I was looking for some input regarding these two boilers? Also, I haven't actually found any other brands in our area and open to suggestion.  Pretty sure I want a gasser for the efficiency.

Thanks,
Pete

For cleaning simplicity stick wit the G200, also compare warranties.

I'm liking the accesability for cleaning at the bottom of the exchanger tubes on the Polar brand along with cooler stack temps.

Check the reviews on FURNACECOMPARE.COM
some people are happy.
Some people are frustrated.

Perhaps I'm looking at something different but that seems to be for oil / gas fired units.
I also like the clean look of an insulated cabinet around the entire unit with no creosote drools down the front or back of my boiler from poor gaskets and door adjustments.

Thanks for the input.

Jim,
The polar looks interesting. Would you happen to know if the firebox is ss409?

Thanks,
Pete

I own a g200. Very happy with it. Being in Ct you don't have a choice whether or not you get a gasser, you can't get a non gasser in Ct. I know someone who has a CB 750 and he is happy with it but CB has a reputation for not honoring their warranty and also they have had issues with serious rotting issues with their E series gassers. I would steer away from them based on the lack of warranty support. I would also check out the Polar brand. Make sure you buy Logstor, Rehau or thermopex. I went with logstor because it was true 1" Id unlike the thermopex 1" which was around 7/8" Id, big flow difference.

One guy has a poor review of his dealer which he decided to rate the boiler badly because of his poor dealer, second guy probably ran green wood and wonders why he has to load it every 4 hours.

Yeah, it's like reviews on Amazon, some are useful, some are not.. I've seen a product reviewed poorly because of slow shipping. !!
But if there is a consistent problem it usually shows up in reviews. Taking the time to read is usually worth it.

I had an old CB Classic (non gasser), replaced it this past January with a G200.  Very happy with the furnace and the dealer I bought it from.  Mine has been running continuously since January 4th 2017 and I have run a bit over six cords through it since then.  4300 sf of heating space (will be closer to 6000 sf come this fall) plus hot water for five people and occasional pool heat this summer.  A couple minor issues, a slight learning curve, but overall it's been great.

If I could have found a nearby Polar dealer at the time I would have looked more closely at them as well, heard good things, but mine was somewhat of an emergency purchase owing to total failure of the CB unit.

Yup Ben, I guess I missed it but then again you didn't post the whole link did ya, Thanks Eldon for posting the entire link, ever wonder why with all the boilers HeatMaster has out there that the site doesn't have a single review? Perhaps I'm missing something there as well.

I can find the 2016 reviews, just can’t find any for 2017.
