Bill-

Hows the installation going? Get that "Black snake" buried yet?

Yes Sir!!

Went smooth...had help from 3 friends and Sunday saw lots of progress.  47 ft buried and 13 stubbed up and buried in direction of very distant future hot-tub!  Thank goodness for my friend Ed, and his nephew Rory!  He had the pleasure of driving the hammer drill w/5" core drill going thru 10" poured foundation.  Took about 1/2 hr of drilling/chiseling to get thru.  Nice, clean job and that pipe fit easily thru.  Also, 1.5" hole for electric conduit.  Drilled slight angle downhill going out of basement so any ground water shouldn't follow.  Mixed up hydraulic cement and packed around pipe.  Re-coated w/foundation tar.

Mini excavator did fine digging trench and leveling pad.  5 1/2 ft deep for sweep in both pipes to come up straight put of the ground!  Stiffer than "wedding night pipe"!!

Pad will be 12 ft sq.  Put down 5 tons of 2b mod to level up yesterday.  Today, when I get in gear, will put in forms.  Figuring 3 yds concrete for 5 1/2" thick.  Will roof over and close in left side and back.

Never worked w/metal roofing and need to find out about such?  Don't seem to dificult.  Planning on 2 ft over-hang all around.

Quite possible to get pad poured Friday.  If my only mason buddy can spare a couple hrs to put nice finish on it for me.

Lot of beer caps buried in trench!!  All enjoyed steak dinner Sunday evening...Thank God for great Friends!!!

Keep in touch...

Bill

Nice progress report! Once you get it installed you'll be like me, waitng for a real Pa winter to give her the real test!

I'm up to 5 cords split and stacked. Triaxle load should be here by the weekend. Guess what I'll be doing?  ;)

I am guessing you don't have the same weather as here. Was over 90 yesterday. Was mid 80's today with 80-100% humidity. :P

Mr. Ridgekid,

Got started on forms.  Forced to oversee teener baseball practice as coach had other commitment.  Thought I was done with that!  Ran infield practice and those bats seem heavier every year.

Anyhoo, I got about as much wood put up as you do.  Certainly not done, just sidetracked.  Will be making call soon for my load of oak.  Sister and bil also ordering this time.  Hoping for same price as last time, but not holding my breath on that as fuel prices way HI!!!!!

All in all, yes, things moving along in positive direction!

Hey Guys,

Rain has put off pouring concrete til probably thursday.

Used time in-betweenst rain events to buck up nother cord and 1/2 of oak.  Will split and stack as weather permits.  Want to be fully ready and over-stocked for coming winter.  Logs been down for a year and should be seasoned nicely for winter 11/12.  Bark readily falls off when handling.  Looking good!

Gives me 6+ cords of oak and 1 1/2 cords of poplar.  Not done yet, and will continue with the never ending free searches.  Figure the poplar will fill in for April/early May next year.

Got price on triax load and went to $650 this year.  Up 100 fr. 2 yrs ago.  Not gonna complain because it is such "primo" logs delivered in the past.  A conservative guess would be 8 cord on truck.  My pal sure does heap the load!  With my own pickins, and the truck delivery, I always got 2 years worth with the 4200 Quadrafire.  Burned 6 cord annually, loading 5-6 times per day.  Hoping maybe only cord more per yr with the new "soon to be delivered" PM opt 250.  Time will tell!

Will get pic's when pad is poured.

The tree I cut down this weekend was like that-Bark falling off. Don't know what was keeping it on the tree till it fell. Solid all the way to the base. Yet dead with exception of one limb with a few leaves on it. Split super easy too.

Nice to be cutting for a OWB instead of indoor woodstove. I can cut the pieces bigger! Not too big, got to make sure the wife can still handle them when its her turn to stock it!  ;D

6 cords done. Need two more to finsh the stack by the OWB. Then start a backup stack, which could be another 8 depending on the triaxle load.

I got a load like this that was supposed to be 10 cord but was actually around 9.

RSI-
If you don't mind me asking, what did you pay for that? Our load will be without trailer.

Post by: RSI on May 16, 2011, 08:58:28 PM
Got it last fall and it was $900.
It was loaded just the same. The truck isn't completely full at the back. He claimed it was 60,000 Lbs of wood and that was all he could legally haul.
I cut it all into 32" pieces and piled it in the wood shed. (unsplit) The shed is 18' wide and has an 8-1/2' ceiling. It didn't quite make 3 rows. The 3 rows were probably closer to 100" because of not stacking perfect. Supposedly the wood pile expands about 15% when split so figuring that way it would have been slightly over 10 cord but the way it sits is around 9 cord.

Not bad! They don't have rigs like that around here. Just the triaxle. So if I get 5.5 cords for $550 it appears pricing is about the same.

There was another place that was $800 that was supposedly the same amount but they had a lot of elm and walnut in it.
This was probably over 95% oak. I think there was one cherry log and a few hickory in it.

I am trying to figure out how to get this: http://madison.craigslist.org/for/2380675317.html (http://madison.craigslist.org/for/2380675317.html)
The problem is that it is 50 miles away. He says he thinks it is between 15 and 25 cords.

Any bets on how many cords this is?

Hey Ridgekid.
Nice load and not a real lot of spilt work!  It will surely do fine!!!

Got pad poured today.  Rained some and kept covered during rain events.  Finish should be ok.  Mason/finish buddy recomends keeping 6x6 posts off of pad and to dig holes and  put in bag or so of quik-crete to set posts on for 6x's.  Will take his advice.

Furnace to arrive next Friday.  Wood splitting finished w/ stacking of final pile to follow.

Looking to find 1" crimp tool for pex???  Step at a time here.  buy, rent,?

Very happy with progress...once in a while question sanity??  Still don't wish to pay LP guy...

Truly appreciate a good peppp talk!  12 X12 pad.  Looks good.

If you were closer, I'd be over to help tackle that load!

I thought you bought metric pex? If so, I think you will have a hard time finding a crimp tool.
If you did get normal 1" pex (SDR9) then I would suggest a cinch tool.

Mr. RSI,

Got the Logstor stuff.  1" id.  Appreciate your suggestion as to what crimp tool and clamps.  Also, what type valves and w/1" barbs, etc.

Learning as I go, as you can tell...

Bill

I think you will have to use compression fitting on that. There might be crimp tools made for it but they will be hard to find. What is the mm size of the pipe? You will need to look for a metric tool and rings if you want it to do it that way.  I talked to a distributor about that pipe once and he said they just used irrigation tubing fittings with it because it is the same size. That was the biggest reason I didn't deal with him.

I don't think the cinch clamps work on anything bigger that the normal 1" pex.

Did he tell you the weight of it? If you know the approximate moisture and weight you can guess pretty close. Live trees are about 6000 Lbs per cord.

i have no idea but i will make my guess as ....1 cord per foot of hight from the truck bed (let us know what you really get)

BillG-
Thanks for the offer, it's actually better than what I get around here. (excuses) But as noted, not alot of splitting to do. I would return the offer for your install if I was closer.

RSI-
No idea on the weight. I had to meet him about 4 miles away and sneak him up some 10 Ton limit roads at 8:30 at night. Think he weighed more than that? (Joking- I know he did)

willieG-
Like I said, I hope it's at least 6 cords. Otherwise I'm wasting my time. 1 cord around here costs $150 + $60 delivery (Delivery only charged once-not per cord) . Will report final total.

Hey Guys,

Don't wish to bore you all,  but pad is poured and finish come out nice.  Sealed and looking good.  Sat on chair near middle, 12 x12, and drank a beer admiring the view!

Boiler scheduled for delivery this coming Friday.would that be 28 May...

Baseball and boiler...2 past time activities

My son will be of college age in 3 short years, and we need to find any angle for the coin to help him.  Heat and feed his a@@ til 18 and send him to the same college I attended at age 18, USMC, stand on the yellow footprints!!  Wife and son won't hear any of it.  Too bad.  College is truly a "walk in the park" after 4 yrs in the corp.  Times have changed.  Don't wish to see 3 gens. of my family doing thier time, and my son "wimp out".

Gives me something to think about whilst splitting wood...

Sounds like fun Biill. Wish I was doing that. Where's the pics? BTW- Couldn't get my boys to join either. I put 10 1/2 years in the Navy.

Cuttin-Splitting-Stacking:
Two days down and one to go. Going to have to get some help for the last day, which I might be getting.  I'm about whipped. Close to two thirds done and only stacked 3 1/2 cords. Not looking good for the effort. Good news: My stack for next winter is done, thats 8 cords and have 1 1/2 cords in reserve. I hope to get at least 2 more cords out of the rest of the stack. Thats will make it $100/Cord. For $150/cord I would of only had to stack it. Right now the way I feel it might of been worth it.

I'll post the final numbers tomorrow.

Ridgekid,

Good numbers there Sir!!  You are truly  a workin' fool!!  But, I'm happy to hear from you, as you are truly far ahead of the game.  I will take your numbers any day.  Really going to town on that truck load.  Good feeling to know where the heat will be ON this winter.

10.5 yrs, I do hope your choice to give it up, and not due to health.  I always figured 4 yrs and 1 day equaled 20.  Should have, would.....could have.  I fit in there, and should have stayed.  Sure you know what I mean.

Not many folks these days, with the "gumption" to take on the task of figuring a way to really save some money.  Good for us, too bad for them!  Gotta feel good looking at your year's worth of heat, stacked nice and ready to go when time comes.

Sincere Thanks for your service....beer's on me, when we meet...

Bill

I got out after 10.5 years for the wife and kids. Too hard on them to be gone months at a time.

And now (drum roll please) THE FIREWOOD IS CUT AND STACKED!!!!
Thanks with help of the extra hands today we went through the rest of it in 6 hours. Wife, Son and his girlfirend, Daughter and her Boyfriend and I.
Final tally= 7 cords. Or pretty close. 8 rows 14' long cut to 18" lengths and stacked 5 foot high. That gives us a total of 13 cords for next winter. And we better not use it all! I know the Wife will be screaming for hot water as soon as the first night hits below 40F. (She misses the hot water) .

Boy am i glad thats over with. Looks good anyway. http://outdoorwoodfurnaceinfo.com/forum/index.php?action=media;sa=media;in=50 (http://outdoorwoodfurnaceinfo.com/forum/index.php?action=media;sa=media;in=50)

BillG-

Been a while since we wrote.  How did the Baseball standings go? Did you make it to the playoffs?

Speaking of Baseball, our Pittsburgh Pirates have finally made headlines as they have a good team this year, leading the North Central division. Hope they can keep up the good work!

I didn't see any pictures yet but read somewhere you did get your OWB? Hows the install going?

Hey Ridgekid,

Good to hear from you, friend!!

Baseball season, complete for us.  Amer. Legion team, well, crash and burn comes to mind!!  Number 1 seed going into playoffs only to lose two in a row.  2 and done, as the saying goes...next year, maybe....

Wood furnace still looking nice, sitting on new pad.  And, still connected to nothing!  Projected hook-up for end of August.  Looking forward to family fishing trip to Canada, 2nd week of August.

Hows about this heat wave!!!  Can't stand it much longer!  102 deg. on the old thermometer today!

Good thing we got the wood put up, because impossible to get-r-done in this.

Keep cool and hydrated.  Beer only after Sundown, but would you believe it just don't even taste right?  Must be getting old.

im not sure what my unerground piep really is. i t is logstor non barrier pipe that i think is uner 1 inch ID but maybe over 3/4 id...i just used 3/4 galvenized barbs. heated the pex with my propane torch to warm it up  and then inserted the 3/4 barb and tightened up the stainless screw clamp..ran allwinter with no leaks..and was very cheap...just a sugestion

BillG-

Sorry to hear about the baseball season. Pirates have been faltering also.

You better wait till it gets cooler out to continue the install. Us young guys apparently can't take the heat. Went to a wedding yesterday and the reception was out doors. 90F+ in the shade. Not sure what the heat index was. It was so bad I nearly passed out. Fingers tingling, felt light headed. Went to the truck for relief. Son's girlfirend passed out for a few minutes. OK THATS IT...LETS GO HOME! Didn't even get to eat. Probably didn't help I was at a Bud Light promo the night before drinking FREE beer!  :bash:

No doubt we can be thankful the wood is cut and stacked. I'd be hurting trying to get it done before winter at this point.

Have fun on the fishing trip! Mind me asking where your going in Canada?

Title: Re: Pinging BillG

hey Ridgekid,

Fingers tingling, light headed....Thought was just me a few times this summer!   Scary feeling.

You didn't even get to eat the rubber chicken at the wedding???  Missed out on a good meal, I bet.  Well, as long as you left "the card" before you guys left!  This summer is tough on the body and pocket book for sure.  Really tough to stay motivated after 10 or 11 am.

Free Bud light promo, now that's more like my idea of a summer event!  In an air-conditioned establishment.  Possible fund raiser for the Dads from our Legion baseball team!  Should include a few of the Moms also.  Some put us to shame at the "game over" tail gate rituals.

We fish on the Rideou river system near Perth, Ont.  Been going there for years and always a good time.  Bass and pike.  Sometimes troll for lake trout, early mornings.

I surely have enough split and stacked, wood, for this winter.  But, every day I look at that nice pile of pole length oak and would really like to get on it, for next year.  So, the good intention is there and no way am I touching it in this heat!  And the hook-up event is still looming in the distance.  And Fat Jack, the beagle pup needs new run built, garage could use a straightening up, 96 deg on thermometer this fine Sunday.  I better just grab a "cold one", and go sit back out under the shade tree and ponder what to do first!!

Keep in touch,
Bill    >:D

BillG-

Most expensive dinner I bought and didn't get to eat. Yeah we left the card. LOL

Can't say I've been where you are going fishing. We boat in Canada every other year. Last year we spent two weeks in Little Current, ONT. Beautiful country!

I power washed the front of the house this morning and greased the pickup's grease fittings. Thats it for me. Going to stay indoors the rest of the day. I'll be going on my next business trip which includes KY, OH, DE and NY the next two weeks. Don't want to overwork myself.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend.

Hey BillG-

Any updates on the Install?

How did you make out with IRENE? We didn't get one drop of rain from her. She never made it over the mountains. Since her passing the weather has been perfect here in Western PA. Turned off the AC and opened the windows.

I noticed a couple of "new" dead standing trees and will get the chain saw out to top off the wood stack. I have enough room for about two more rows 12' long.

Winters on her way. The ferns on the forest floor are already retreating.  Wife saw a black catipillar wearing a LARGE coat. It won't be long now.

Ridgekid,

Good to hear from you!  Summer is waning and, just like the bad winter, I's glad to see it finally end!  Hate the heat, but this past winter was long, even for me!

Work has picked up and no complaints there.  Got a 70 plate w-w HX and deciding on which pumps to spend on.  The pipe is 1" ID and maybe Taco 009 at the very least?  Also, should control pump in basement (for pressurized system) with aquastat??  I would think there is no need for it to run 24/7?  Thinking set aquastat to come on at 150, off at 170???

Also, need to get crimp tool in for this size pex.

As you can tell, far too much time in thought phase and not much in doing phase yet...But I guess procrastinatin' can be good for the end result.

As for hurricane, we got got about 4-5 inches of rain and some folks had trees blown down.  Certain areas had lots of trees down.  I see a good chance for next years supplemental supply!

Fat Jacks dog run coming along.  Sure glad I bought all plywood before this hurricane!  See increases by the minute!

Keep in touch and I value your experiences in hook-er-up phase!!

I have propane furnace now.   From OWB:  Install elec recep for pump.  Full flow valve before and aft. pump.  Come off top port of OWB.  It runs 24-7.  Full flow valves bef/aft HX.  FF valve at OWB return.

In basement:  Come off top of furnace, FF valve bef/aft pump.  Need to get well for aquastat in there.  run to HX w/valves bef/aft.  Back to bottom of furnace.   And forgot, 2 wye strainers before inlets on HX.

Seems to simple??  Advice Ridgekid...Thanks in advance!!!!

Bill

Hey there you are! Confirms IRENE didn't blow the eastern half of the state off the map, although it looks like it might float away......

PUMPS: I don't have any expierance in these, but if my TACO 007 ever goes out, its going to be a Grunfos ALPHA pump. These pumps are amazing as they are self adjusting to load requirement. MTJAG installed them.

So if I understand correctly, you have a pressured propane boiler? I'm not really familiar with those installations but can offer this CB drawing for referance.

http://www.centralboiler.com/Tech/C220.pdf (http://www.centralboiler.com/Tech/C220.pdf)

If i misunderstood and picked the wrong one, there are other drawings available here:

http://www.centralboiler.com/otherExamples.html (http://www.centralboiler.com/otherExamples.html)

And of course we have actual installers on this board that can assist.
