Equipment / Re: 460 rancher bar length ?
« on: January 17, 2016, 07:21:06 PM »
When I bought my stihl ms-361 it had a 20" bar.  Most everything I cut is between 10 and 14 inches so I put a 16" bar on it.  Seems like with the 20" bar I always end up with the tip in the dirt cause everything I cut is on the ground.  The 16 is much better,  runs a lot faster rpm and the chains are cheaper and easier to sharpen.  I still keep my 20 for the bigger stuff but I use the 16 95% of the time.

Great thanks Slim!  Anybody heat with just radiant?  Anybody who heats with both radiant and a furnace exchanger did you notice a difference when you went to the radiant with the heat in the house.  Did you still leave the house temp the same or did you lower?   Would love to hear from anybody with radiant and how it works.  Thanks guys.

Slim could I still use this setup and go to the floor joist instead of the inslab?  Also can you go to the heat exchanger first then the DHW, then the in floor heat?  I have mine set up right now going to the heat exchanger then the DHW.  Have any of the installs used radiant floor heat only?  I'm wondering how much more load this would put on the boiler.  I would think you would be able to drop your in house temp because it would heat more evenly and it would call for heat less and stay on a lot less.  Thanks for all your help.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Radiant floor question
« on: January 16, 2016, 07:16:25 AM »
This is my first season with my OWB and I love it of course but I would like to add radiant floor under my joist.  Although the house is set at 73 I have tile over 75% of the house and it feels cold.  I wanna do the Ultra Fin so it doesn't touch the floor and I don't have to mess with the mixing valve.  I need to pick Slims brain on the Ultra fin since he's done a bunch of installs but I only wanna do one zone and I couldn't find anything searching on here for what I wanted to do till I found a diagram on Central Boilers website. They go to a sidearm, 48" I presume, then to a heat exchanger, and then to the pump that goes to to the radiant floor and back out to the OWB.  Has anybody ever done this that way.  Does anybody heat with just radiant floor.  I'm assuming the two would run in unison when the house calls for heat.  This seems like the simplest way cause I look at some of those diagrams with all the zones and pumps and I'm lost.  I'll try to post a picture of the diagram if I can figure out how to post it.  Any help is much appreciated.  Thanks.  EDIT: I've added the attachment below.

I'm with ya Intensedrive!  First year heating with NCB-175 so I have the round firebox with grates and air under the middle.  I'm having the same issue.  The stuff on the outside is not burning.  Wasn't an issue before with it being so warm and I only had to load a couple pieces but now that its got cold finally I'm needing to load more.  I am burning a bunch of junk wood that I wouldn't drag in the house before but still!  What I'm trying now is loading my split stuff on first with split side down on the coals then loading my rounds.  I stack it in a pyramid shape since nothing on the far outside is burning anyway.  It seems to be working a lot better but I definately haven't perfected it yet.

Right you are Mlappin!  I've been lurking and absorbing information for years before I done my Install.  It was this site and members input that helped me do the install myself.  I hope after I get some years under my belt I can pay it forward and help some other new coming rookies!  Subscribed life long member.

Thanks for the reply RSI.  The two at the hx and two at the sidearm are sharkbite slip ons.  The two just inside the house are pex crimps.  The return line feels exactly like the supply line.  Cant tell a difference.  Funny you should mention the check valve cause I just saw a post on that, so no I didnt.  I think ill just leave it in for the winter but ill definitely take it out for next season.  If I was to add radiant heat under the floor for next year would this pump still be ok.  Thanks again

Finally got boiler up and running about a month now and everything seems to be good.  Now id like to order a back up pump but not sure if I sized it right.  I thought I read where you figured 90º fittings with 1" line as 1ft of head but now saw on taco site its 2.62.  I also thought you figured in elevation but saw a post where " RSI " said he doesnt figure in elevation.  So im not sure ive got the right pump or not.  So heres a little background.  1920 sqft ranch very well insulated.  Boiler is 55ft from house and another 35ft inside, so 180ft round trip with a 10 to 12ft elevation up to boiler.  Theres 6 90º fittings and 2 ball valves heating with a 18x22 hx and a sidearm for dh.  This is a NC-175 and im using a grundfos 15-58.  If this is the wrong pump what would you recommend.  Everything seems to be working but its been unusually warm here in northeast Ohio.  Any help would be appreciated.

Sprinter im not sure of the exact btu I need but I know the furnace in the house is 75000 input/ 67000 output!  Im not going to heat the garage all the time but would like to flip the fan on when working in there.  Unfortunately even if I moved the boiler by the house I would still have to pump down to the garage and I really dont have a good spot to put it by the house.  Im sure logstor is the best but I dont think I can swing it with all the other expenses.  Just not enough in the budget unfortunately!  Slim im curious why I would need a 40 or 50 plate and not just a 20 plate.  Not doubting you but I thought the Plate exchanger was just to put back pressure on the return line and figured it really wouldnt matter what size.  Rodger sorry I didnt see your question on brand!  I like a couple different brands and im lucky in that I have about 6 or 7 different dealers within 45 min of me.  Central, natures comfort, woodmaster, tennessee, taylor, acme, mahoning, hawken.  I know people with central, natures comfort, woodmaster, and mahoning and they all look very well built.  I just wish there was someone with my setup  that could give an answer on whether this will work before I dump all this money into it.  Thanks for the replys!

First thanks for all the replys and the help!  Second im not putting the boiler in the garage and after reading it I guess I did make it sound that way.  The boiler is definately going outside I just meant it was going beside the garage.  Im building an overhang for all my wood and the boiler will go on the far corner of that!  Slim Ive heard of a plate exchanger before and im assuming you mean just like the ones for your DHW.  So if im understanding you correctly the water will go back through the plate exchanger before going in the boiler on the return side to help keep pressure on the return line so it will keep air from getting in the line?  So for the line im assuming ill need 1 1/4 or like Wood Nutt said pex-al-pex with a true 1" ID? I was going to place the pump at the boiler like Wood Nutt said so it would be at the lowest point and I figured it would be easier to push than pull the water. Am I thinking correctly? Thanks again for all your help!

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / New install need help!

Im finally ready to to start my install but need some advice on what size line and pump for my application?  I have a 1920 sqft ranch with a basement built in 1996 thats well insulated with furnace in the basement. I also want to be able to heat my garage which is where ill place the boiler.  I have a 260' run from the boiler to the house uphill with an elevation change of about 20'!  I have another 25 to 30' in the house so im looking at about 550' total loop.  First of all is this gonna work with the boiler 20' below the the house pumping uphill?  Second will 1" line work or do i need to go to 1 1/4?  Third what size pump will i need?  Im looking at some 5 wrap inside some 6" heavy wall PVC for the line.  I really cant put the boiler any where else and i really dont want to go to a closed system so any help is much appreciated!  Thanks!

I was just thinking with the chimney closer to the ambers it would be worse but ive been told by a couple guys with Acme that sparks werent an issue either.  I think your right on the wood, ive burned some stuff that really popped when it started getting hot!  Thanks Scott.  I spoke with you on the phone a while ago about my situation and ill be in touch in a couple of months when im ready to order some stuff.  I have a couple more questions about pumps and what size line but ill start another thread for that.  Thanks again!
