General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Burning corn cobs
« on: October 10, 2013, 03:43:31 AM »
Do you think it would be worth trying to burn some corn cobs? Farmers are starting to knock down the corn by my house and there is a pile of cobs lying around. Got me thinking? I wonder if I could get a long burn time or if it would just be a waste of my time.....

Well my grandmother neglected changing out her shaker grates for some yrs now. They were warped really bad. Anyhow I am in the process of swapping them out now. My issue I ran into is the frame that sits on the two I-beams is warped in the front. There are 5-6 grates that sit in this frame starting from the back of the stove moving to the front. I tried to put the new one in the front today and it was about 1/4" to long (the grate was to long).. I can't explain this the best but from the grate warping so bad it wasnt pushing out on the frame to keep it from bowing in so the front of the frame looks like it rolled up and caved in. The frame is basically angle iron welded together, thats about the best way to describe it. I dont want to buy a new frame as they are $200+ so my question is what is a good method to tryin straighten this frame back out. I tried beating it with a hammer that did nothing but ring my ears.

I have a stihl farmboss 290. I have been cutting more wood than I ever thought I would, 30+ tress that my buddy wants dropped and I keep the wood. Well I have been blowing threw chains left and right with all that I am cutting. Im tired of sharpeining them all the time, they just dont stay sharp long. Im not sure exactly what chains they are all I know is that they are the stihl brand for a 20" bar.

What chains do you all use or prefer that will stay sharper longer, Mind you I dont get down in the dirt and stones with it and its almost ALL hard oak.

What sharpeining items do you all prefer? I use old fashioned hand files but that is getting old quick. I have a dremel tool but do not have the attachments to sharpen a chainsaw chain. I need something that works quick in the field and wont butcher my chain.

Well I finally installed my new insulated lines and let me tell you what a pain in the acc it was!!! If you see the one pic with the view of inside the pipe you can see how far I got it fed threw and and just would not budge anymore, literally! When they put the orginal lines in all they did was wrap them in plain jane foam wrap, well when they did that it pulled off the lines and got balled up in the pipe hence the reason I couldn't feed the new ones in. Well I couldnt figure out where the foam was balled up so as you can see I started digging to find the clog, It was right in the elbow by the stove. Go figure!!!!! The other side was just fine all the foam came out. Well I started this project at 11am and finished at 2am!! In that elbow I pulled out 6pcs of 10ft foam. Didnt think that much foam could get wedged in a 6" tile. Not a very fun Saturday into Sunday let me tell you.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Hardy efficiency plates
« on: May 15, 2013, 12:08:27 AM »
There is an old thread about these plates. Has anyhow tried them yet, if so what pros and cons have you found with them? I called the dealer today about them. He told me not to get them because Hardy would void the warranty if they were used. My warranty is about up and was thinking about getting the plates to try but wanted some insight before I drop the $$$.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Water heater
« on: April 24, 2013, 09:56:29 PM »
Hooked up my first water heater. Everything was hooked up right I know for a fact. But I turned it on today and let go for about 3hrs then tried to use the hot water, Nothing. I went down stairs and felt the cold and hot lines on the water heater and the hot line was maybe luke warm. Just a bit warmer than the cold line. Any ideas what could be wrong? I just bought this heater so its brand new. Maybe a bad heating element??? Im stumped and its probably going to piss me off if I have to unhook it and take it back.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Where to find grates
« on: April 02, 2013, 01:51:17 AM »
Title says it all. I am switching out my shaker grate system on my hardy h4 and want to go with a 3 grate system. Does anybody know where I can get them for a fair price? I also may be interested in selling the shaker grate system with a few new grates that were never installed. Thanks.

Hardy / hardy h4 grates
« on: March 04, 2013, 07:05:37 PM »
Anybody have any experiance or know anyone who had shaker grates then switched to using regular grates? Im asking because I have shaker grates and want to get regular grates and need to know if its as simple as removing the shakers and putting new in. I dont know if there is a difference in the layout of the two. i.e- if there will be spacing issues.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / What pump to use
« on: February 28, 2013, 11:24:44 PM »
A friend of mine just offered me 2 pumps he got and never used. I have a WILO that is going to take a dump here soon (JUNK) and it is brand new. Never again will I get that brand of pump. Anyhow, Scott7m is hooking me up with a pump but I figure since my friend has two on hand I might as well get one and replace that crappy WILO with one of the following two and keep Scotts pump as backup, I was going to keep the WILO for backup but that thing will be getting tossed. Which is better. TACO 00R-MSF1 41FC 3-speed or a GRUNDFOS UPS15-58FC 115v 3-speed. Now I run 3/4" pex and this pump will be running water to the upstairs baseboard.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / New pump is loud.
« on: February 25, 2013, 08:30:07 PM »
I noticed this morning when I got home from work I went into the bedroom and heard what sounded like a pump running. I went downstairs and noticed my brand new Wilo 3 speed pump was the suspect. It was flowing and working no problem. It wasn't making a chattering noise just louder than I thought it would be. Its louder than my taco. Now this pump runs heat upstairs so I understand it is going to be running harder. But my question is, are these always running loud? My girlfriend says she hears it every night when she goes to bed since we been there and its been almost 6mths since we moved in. My gram had the pump installed the week we moved in. Seems to be working fine just got brought to my attention since I finally got to hear it.??? Maybe the small things bother me to much lol

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Pex leak
« on: February 10, 2013, 08:36:38 PM »
Well found my first leak. The picture really dont do any justice but the fitting that connects the pex to the copper is leaking. Is this something I can fix myself without any special tools? I never worked with pex, if it were copper it would be simple. Where would I  have to shut the water off and how do I bleed the air out if I am able to do this myself? I don't want to get air in there as it goes directly into the circulator pump. Want to fix myself but almost at the point of having someone come fix it. Its not a bad leak when pump is running but when the pump stops look out. drips pretty good.

Hardy / Shaker grates warpped
« on: January 30, 2013, 11:25:53 PM »
Does anybody have any links or anything about changing shaker grates. Mine are warpped and need replaced but since I am burning now I can't really see how they are layed in the stove with all the ash and what not. I can't find a single write up or even a single picture showing how there set in there. Im hoping its as simple as pulling old ones out and flopping new in?
