Plumbing / Water temp.
« on: December 28, 2017, 05:54:12 AM »
The incoming water from the OWB is nice and hot ranging from 180 to 195. When all 4 zones are calling for heat, the water temp returning to the OWB is a delta T of 20 to 25. I have baseboard emitters throughout my house with exception of the kitchen, it has a wall hung convector. My set up is, I have the water constantly circulating between the oil burner and FPHX. The water temp inside the oil burner fluctuates between 140 and 150 degrees. This causes the wall convector in the kitchen to run continuously, although it's a comfortable 70 degrees in there. The circulators at the OWB and between the oil burner and FPHX are Grundfos 22-99, each set to the number 2 position. My question is; if I turned up the speed on the circ between the oil burner and FPHX to the number 3 position, will it help or hinder with the water temp inside the oil burner? I'm trying to get the water inside my oil burner as hot as I can, which is the reason for turning up the speed on the circ. In my feeble mind, this makes sense. I will add it's a comfortable 70 degrees inside this 1840's farmhouse. The outside temp this morning is around -10 without the windchill factored in.  Thanks.  Roger

There isn't any music around better than when those 4 men get together on stage to perform.  NH Public TV is showing an old concert these 4 guys did together and it is great.  I hope you get a chance to see it.  Roger

General Discussion / Stihl MS193C Chainsaw
« on: November 25, 2017, 01:46:03 PM »
Hi all, I hope you can help.  If not, I'll have to bring it to the local business from whom I purchased it.  I purchased the saw a couple of weeks ago, mainly for trimming and limbing.  I've put about 2 tanks of gas through her.  I was using it yesterday morning trimming up around our stonewall and she started to die out.  I figured it need gas because I'd been using it a while.  So I open the gas tank cap and it still has about 1/4 tank of gas. That's odd.  But seeing I had the cap off the tank I topped her off and filled the bar and chain oil reservoir.  I go to start it and it won't start.  I figure I flooded her so I hold the throttle wide open.  She starts but the motor oscillates up and down, coughs and then quits.  I try to start it again but it won't fire, so again I hold the throttle wide open and it starts, but once again, the motor oscillates, coughs and then quits.  Well I had work to do so I grab my MS 311 and finish the job.  The MS311 has the same gas as the MS103C.  So this morning I want to use the MS193C due to it's light weight; it's a great saw for trimming.  I set the choke, prime it like the directions say (Yes, I read the directions) and pull the rope.  She fires up but quits almost immediately.  I tried starting it again.  The motor starts but only for a brief moment before it quit.  It will not stay running, the motor will oscillate, cough and then quit.  Any ideas?  This saw has a 4 year warranty on her so if it means tearing into it, I'm taking to the dealer who sold it to me.  Roger

General Discussion / Cracks in block wall
« on: November 16, 2017, 05:16:40 PM »
Hi all, Most of my basement has poured walls and floor except for the last 2 feet at the top, it's blocks.  Over the last few years I have noticed water seeping through small cracks in the mortar, only in the bulkhead area, but it has been getting steadily worse for the past couple of years.  Is there something I can apply to the seams to keep the water outside?  It's an unfinished basement.  Thanks.  Roger

Central Boiler / Good test
« on: November 11, 2017, 04:41:18 AM »
At the beginning of every heating season I'm always a little anxious to see how my E-Classic 1400 will perform when the first cold snap comes through.  The temps overnight was in the low teens and falling with north winds gusting to 20Mph plus.  I live on a north facing mountain with nothing to protect the house from the north winds.  The firebox was about 1/2 full when I serviced her at 6:00pm last night and when I checked on her this morning at 6:00am it could have gone another hour before needing wood.  Regardless of what you have for an OWB, it is wonderful to get out bed in the morning to a warm house and not hearing the oil/gas burner running.  I pray and hope she continues this way through the entire cold season.  Roger

General Discussion / She's tucked in
« on: November 09, 2017, 07:27:21 AM »
Well, it is officially fall.  Last week I tucked the motorcycle in for the cold seasons; new oil and oil filter, gas treatment in the tank, battery in the basement of my house and she covered over.  However, on my way to work this morning I past a hearty soul on a Harley.  Either that's all he has for transportation, is stubborn and doesn't want to give in too fast, or he's simply glutton for punishment; whatever it is, it had to be damned cold on that thing this morning with temps around 20 F.  Thankfully I outgrew that stupidity.  Roger

My co-worker just turned 50 and shot his first deer, ever, yesterday.  He's been hunting since he was 15 years old.  It was around 110 pound doe but you swear he won the powerball.  I have never been happier for someone than this guy.  Patience and perseverance pays off.  Roger

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Heating costs expected to go up
« on: November 01, 2017, 03:55:37 AM »
I saw this on another site I visit.

"According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, natural gas expenditures are expected to rise by 12 percent, home heating oil by 17 percent, electricity by 8 percent and propane by 18 percent. Most of the increase is attributed to colder weather, rather than higher energy costs".

I guess time will tell if it does go up.  But, I'm glad I burn wood.  :)

Central Boiler / Gonna fire her up
« on: October 27, 2017, 03:15:04 AM »
Hi all, Well, I think I'll be firing up the E-Classic 1400 tomorrow.  I find I have to run the oil burner a little each day when I get home from work to break the chill in the house so I might as well keep the money in my pocket and get her going.  This is by far the furthest I have gone into the fall before firing her up, usually it's at the beginning of Oct.  I'm entering my 7th season with it and that seems to be the time when people have been experiencing leaks, etc... with them, so I'm praying this thing stays together for one more season.  Over the past 6 seasons, other than the occasional hiccup, it has run flawlessly.

General Discussion / Pellet stove operators in here?
« on: October 07, 2017, 01:35:47 PM »
One of my older brothers and his wife recently purchased a home that came with a pellet stove.  It was manufactured in 1994.  It's a Whitfield WP2 Advantage.  They decided to give it to me as thanks for all of the help I give them.  My plan is use it during the shoulder season but I have to admit I know absolutely nothing about pellet stoves.  So I have a younger brother who lives in the apartment above me and we finally got it installed.  We fired her up and it took the chill right out of this old house in no time.  But, here's the problem.  For some reason after about a half hour of use she shuts down.  We hit the start button and she fired right up both times.  I'm at a loss for why this is happening.  Help?!  Thanks  Roger

I've been riding a motorcycle many years and this is the first time I've ever been stung.  It being a hot day, I didn't have my biker gloves on so there was a direct shot up my sleeve.  I felt it enter up my sleeve and I didn't want it to go any further so I crushed it with my left hand through the leather and I knew it would sting me.  It did.  It got me just below my right elbow.  Dang that hurt!  Oh well, it could have been worse.  Roger

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Intermittent problem with oil furnace
« on: September 22, 2017, 05:42:16 PM »
Okay, I do not know where to post this so if you feel it needs to move please do so.

This spring I performed a service on my oil furnace.  I changed the nozzle, pump screen and tank filter.  I cleaned everything very well.  It's been running great all summer up until about a week or so ago when I heard my oil furnace running which in not uncommon in the summer, it heats my DHW.  What was uncommon is that it had a very brief interruption, when I say brief I mean for a split second.  I checked on the furnace and all appeared fine.  I didn't give it a second thought.  But, this morning it did it again only this time it did it 3 times in a row.  It did not trip out, I did not have reset anything.  Every time after it "burped" it continued running until the high set point was reached.  When I got home from work this evening I decided to change out the nozzle, cleaned the pump screen (didn't have a new one on hand).  I did not have another tank filter to change so I didn't touch it.  If it does it again, I'm contacting my HVAC guy to have them go through it for me.    Anyone have any ideas what happened?   Thanks, Roger
