General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Will the water be hotter...
« on: February 22, 2015, 05:14:55 PM »
I put a thermometer in the back of the hardy today, the bung I used is at the top. When I screwed it in and checked the temp, it was 155. Aquastat is supposed to be 164 on 174 off. I then bumped the aquastat up till it kicked the blower on and let it cycle. The temp then got to 172 before it shut off. I'm just wondering if the water is hotter up top or can my aquastat be off that much? i figure in loosing about 20 degrees form the boiler to the inside hx. I do have a temp gauge on the supply line inside. It's just a thermocoupler taped to the line. It's now reading 152..

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Let's see some shelters over you OWB..
« on: February 21, 2015, 06:40:58 AM »
I'm thinking about building a roof over my OWB to keep everything out of the weather. Only problem is my yard is sloped. Can you guys post pics of your setups so I can get a better idea of what I want. I want to store some wood under it and definitely coal. I'm thinking maybe 3 sides with a gap toward the top to let smoke out? Thanks in advance..

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Got some coal to try! Picture added..
« on: February 16, 2015, 04:13:06 PM »
A guy I know who has a trucking company had a pile of coal laying around and told me to help myself. So I went and got about 500 pounds. The only problem is there is a a lot of fines in it along with some softball size pieces. Will it hurt to burn those fines? I have a Hardy H-4. I wanted big lump coal but for this being free I didn't want to pass it up. I'll post a pick later.

I have a hardy H-4 without shaker grate, I am wanting to burn lump coal. I found it for 70 dollars a ton. Will it be ok to burn coal only? Possibly burn some wood with it too just not as much..

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Burning green wood stinks...
« on: November 25, 2014, 04:46:52 PM »
Well this year I fell behind on wood cutting. Working and field trials took up my spring and summer so now I am burning green oak that was cut and split a month or so ago. My boiler is constantly running and struggling to make enough heat! I know I'll try a lot harder to have seasoned wood from now on. I know a lot of guys say they prefer green wood but I don't know why they say that as it's a pain to deal woth, always going out and doesn't produce a raging fire. Live and learn I guess.. I hope to get some coal in te near future hopefully that will help. I found it here in central ohio for 70 dollars a ton for lump coal.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / My hardy blower...
« on: October 28, 2014, 03:20:46 PM »
I have noticed that my blower doesn't seem to be putting out the CFM like it did when it was new, it's 2.5 years old and has been oiled every so often. I looked at it and the blower blades are covered in creosote. How can I tell if it needs changed? I cleaned the whole boiler out this summer really well so ash build up isn't an issue.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / owb causing allergies?
« on: January 08, 2013, 11:04:41 AM »
My mom mother in law think that my hardy sitting outside is causing my household some sickness. I just want some opinions on this cause I don't believe it at all. We never smell smoke in the house I think they are just looking for something to put the blame on.

Well I just came in from filling up my stove and I noticed a bunch if sparks coming out of the stack so I pulled of the stack and cleaned it.  It had some build up but not too bad. Any suggestions as to why so many sparks. Also which rain cap should I put on it I want to keep sparks from catching anything on fire. Also what is a good product to clean the stainless with. Any tips on this and keeping it clean will help. Thank you
