Equipment / Re: New toy/firewood hauler

Scott price wise I paid $6300.  Kinda pricey for one I think but the thing is it is in nearly perfect shape and only has 19000 miles on it which is very low for one.  Being able to look it over in person I felt comfortable with what I was buying too.  The dump bed and the diff lock was a HUGE plus for me.  I have been in the market for a utv for a while but they are just so damn expensive.  I have a Polaris 700 and a 500 Sportsman four wheeler that I use with a pretty decent size trailer but always wanted one of these or a utv (Polaris Ranger, etc).  The cab and heat in these is a major plus too!

It is supposed to get 40 miles per gallon.  But with the big tires on it I doubt it.  Still does good though.  Has an 8 gallon tank.  Can't wait to load it down with wood and see how it dumps.  The guy I bought it from said it had no problem loaded with wood.

Suzuki Carry with hydraulic dump bed, 4 hi and 4 lo with push button front and rear differential lock, heat, stereo/cd, wipers, etc.  Lifted with aftermarket wheels and tires.  Will be a blast to use!

Yeah I seen that Marty.  That is a pretty nifty little idea!  I wonder if it does gassify very well.  I guess with enough air it could work pretty well. ( obviously it is)  It just seems that only having the heat on the roof of the firebox would lead to a massive hot spot and tend to boil the hell out of the water in that small area if that was really the only heat being utilized. Heck who knows.

This link shows the same guy modifying his furnace the next year by completely lining it with firebrick.  He said it made a huge difference in efficiency!  I thought though that making the firebox "thicker" was supposed to cut down on efficiency????  I thought that it would just reflect the heat and send it right up the chimney????  Surely making the firebox an inch or more thick would make it like 80% less efficient.................(sarcasm intended)

I just can't get over that with all the stuff in the world to worry about that people have to complain and try to get into other peoples business like this.  She doesn't have a clue about rural living and self sufficiency.  Just pisses me off!!!!

All it takes is people like this to spread the fear about our furnaces ........then it all goes downhill from there!  "All it takes is 2 weeks of exposure to one of these things and you will be sick".  We should all be dead by now then eh?

This lady is from an environmental "save the world" organization just slamming the hell out of outdoor wood furnaces!  You need to fast forward to the 15 minute mark because there is a couple of things she is discussing.  Just lovely...... >:(

In all honesty, we should ALL get tax credits for burning 100% renewable energy to heat our homes!  I could see getting a tax credit for a high efficiency gas or electric furnace because you are using less fossil fuel but we aren't burning ANY (except the tiny amount for fans and pumps).  If they are really concerned about the environment they should bend over bacwards for people like us!  I believe though that is not really the case......     :-\

I have a hanging unit in my shop along with a regular furnace with an exchanger in it.  Believe it or not it doesn't get very dirty.  The fins in the exchanger arent quite as condensed and it isn't as thick as a an exchanger for a plenum.  Just a quick cleaning with compressed air once a year is all you need.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / How much TSP to raise ph?
« on: February 09, 2012, 08:23:38 PM »
I have read that TSP can be used to raise the ph in our systems.  I tested my water and it is right at 7 and I want to raise it to about 10 or so.  How much should I use or should I use something else?  System is approx 300 gal.

Just went through cord #8 yesterday.  Started burning September 28 and has been burning ever since.  3300 sq foot home, 2200 sq ft shop.  Keep my house at 70 during the day, 73 in evenings, shop at 68 24/7.  Heat hot water also.  Shop gets the doors raised annd lowered alot and I have a paint booth which draws preheated shop air through so the demand is rather large!  Plus it is nice to pull your iced up car into and have a nice warm car to get into in the morning!  Heating all this with propane would be astronomical!!!!  I couldn't be happier!
