You can usually find some pallets around that r free. Cut them up and mix them in with your wood. Keep the stove hot to prevent the pyrolytic gasses from forming in the stack. Protection from sustained clue gas condinsation is critical for longjevity of any furnace. You should run the backup if the water temp is below 140 degF. For a short term fix.  Or have a thermostatic mixing valve (boiler protection) installed.
Also,Get yourself a moisture meter. 20% or less is great.
  Best regards. Stay warm.

I know this post is kind of old but 20% is almost too dry for me. Burns like a matchstick, plus on the other hand it takes way too long to dry or wood that dry around here. 30% is what I shoot for!  Had some oak sitting for 20 months in the wood shed, tested at 26%

To me that is worth every single thank you.  That is in itself a lost value in this world.  A company than cares.  If a company would care like this and build a stove there is no doubt that I would own it. Customer service, help and a give a crap attitude is what this world is missing.   You can build the best product in the world and it's going to fail once in a while but most of these companies don't give two craps about their warranty or their customers as long as their pocketbook is full.  Thank you for the heart and care.  I hope and pray you guys can get your company back on its feet again someday

Seems like any of the tree service guys around by me either sell their wood or use it themselves.  I've gotten lucky on Craigslist quite often, when the time comes I just go out to the land and get the wood I need but that's a lot more work than picking it up.  I just got 15 box elder trees dropped at my place, they burn hot and leave a lot of ash but free is free!

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: furnance heat exchanger
« on: July 04, 2017, 06:05:47 PM »
I'm sure you are correct. The closest run for me is 10 feet from the furnace plenum. 95 degrees is what my little heat gun reads at the register.  The furthest one is probably 25 feet going upstairs to the master bathroom.  I read about 90 degrees from that one.  Thing is, my furnace heat is only near 80 degrees at the register opening.  Now you really have me curious as to what the temperature is at the Plenum.  This way I could see what kind of btu I am really loosing.  None of the ducting is insulated, I'm sure I could do it quite easily.  Do you have a certain way that works good for you Mr. Lappin?

I run the wood stove at a high limit of 180 degrees, with water temp around 170-180 at the HX in the furnace.  My little temp gauge is right at the interchange from pex to copper.  My furnace is a tad bit undersized for the house.  When it gets into the negative temps it has to run non stop to hold 68.  I've always used wood here, which used to be in a fireplace.  I decided since we are staying in this home for a while to upgrade and move the stove outside instead of upgrading the furnace.  The furnace is somewhat new, 2011 and is very efficient for similar models. Just a little undersized which works fine because we only use it durning the off season.
