Fire Wood / Re: buying wood
« on: December 06, 2009, 02:45:30 PM »
The price is really going to depend on what the suppy vs. demand is.  It may not be a cheap as you think though.  Around here in NE Ohio, I have heard of loads going for between $600 and $800 depending on species and size of the truck.  The last couple of years the cost of diesel was making loads more expensive too.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Looking for low speed fan?
« on: October 20, 2009, 03:26:16 PM »
I agree with bruey.  I had a house built and the HVAC company was incompetent.  Long story short, we have four fans that run when the furnace comes on.  Each one resides in the duct that feeds our upstairs bedrooms.  They are each on rheostat (dimmer switch) that controls the fan speed.  It has done a good job to heat and cool our upstairs.  If you need more info., let me know.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Heat exchanger overheating
« on: June 03, 2009, 01:51:12 PM »
I have mine mounted directly above the furnace in the air plenum.  It sits above the coil for the A/C.  There is some flow restriction, but not enough to cause an issue now.
I was having another problem with the entire heating/cooling system and used to remove the exchanger, but don't any longer.  Basically, when we had the house built, the HVAC people were ignorant.  The 2nd floor was hot in summer and cold in winter.  The problem has now been fixed by another company.

I realize that $1700 is a fair chunk of change.  However, I would agree and go with the new one.  The last guy could have done everything wrong to it and it might not show.  It could save you a huge headache and expense in the future.

Mine was three Feb. 1.  I have used it almost non-stop the entire time.  I only stopped for a couple months last summer when I didn't feel like messing with it.

I actually live in Sugarcreek Twp.  Lehman hardware is about a 15 min. trip.
RW, I haven't followed Fairless sports yet.  I have two little girls that aren't in school and just moved to Fairless district 3 yrs. ago.  That would be nice to meet up sometime and compare notes.

In Sugarcreek where I am, there is no zoning.  I called the Building Dept. and they said they don't care about them, I could do whatever I wanted to with it. No permits of any kind needed.

I read the Independent on a regular basis, but haven't heard Lawrence Twp. was adding any restrictions.  What did they come up with?  I hate to see restrictions for everyone when just a few cause problems.

Great looking shed RW!  How much higher is your chimney than the picture shows?  I am looking for ideas to extend mine.  I live down the road from you outside of Brewster.

Hardy / Re: water loss

No, I don't burn paper or any other "stuff" other than wood and coal.  I have half a suspicion that the fire gets too hot at the chimney and that is why the "high temp." caulking will not last.  I usually load the wood to about halfway up the door or less.  At times, flames shoot out the chimney.  It is not a chimney fire from creosote.  It is just the flames shooting up.  The H2 does not have a plate below the chimeny like other models do.
I am really tired of adding water.  If my house water was okay and I could use the auto fill, I wouldn't care.  But getting water offsite when rain water is frozen is not fun.
As far as I can tell, the water is not getting too hot.  The water temp. seems to be on par with the aquastat.  The water steams and pools aroud the chimney.  I have never seen evidence of any leaks anywhere else.  I guess I should call my dealer and Hardy again.  I just wish I could quit adding water.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer!

I have talked to both Hardy and the dealer I bought it from.  Neither have been much help.  Maybe I should call them again.  I have checked the water temperature with two different meat thermometers.  That is all I had... both showed the same temperature.  It was where it should have been according to the aquastat.  I have also turned down the water temperature this year.  The only difference I have noticed is the furnace runs longer and the hot water doesn't get as hot as fast.
I don't know what else to do at this point.  I put wood in this morning and it was steaming from around the chimney.  If I didn't have to get water from somewhere else, I would not care.  It is a real pain to haul water from elsewhere.

I started this thread a while ago.  I am still having a water loss problem.  Does anyone have any ideas how to reduce it?  I am losing most of my water from around the chimney area.  I have previously caulked with high temp. caulk and that helped for a while.  The directions from the factory show how to do it.  Since, the caulk has burned away and it is steaming there again.  If I could seal it somehow, I think it would help.  I have not been able to find anything to withstand higher temperatures and moisture from the water.  I am adding 5+ gallons a week.   :bash:
The salt in the water is not from a softner.  We have a great gpm well with water that has no iron, the water . is soft, but has salt.  You can slightly taste it. No good for OWB.  I have to get water from somewhere else which is why I care that I am losing water.

There are quite a few people on hearth.com that have E classics.  There is a thread there that has some decent information about the unit.  The general feeling is that Central Boiler is working out the bugs and have made a decent unit.

Hardy / Re: How Much $$$$ have you saved
« on: January 14, 2009, 02:57:23 PM »
This is my 3rd winter with the H-2.  I estimate I have saved at least $6k in propane and electric.  I use the Hardy all year long to heat hot water.  I turned on the electric tank for a couple months to see what difference it made.  I saved about $35 a month in electric.  It is a wonderful thing to never run out of hot water.
