Portage & Main / Re: Bl 2840 ash door dripping water
« on: December 17, 2014, 08:06:47 PM »
I just checked to verify. Built June 2014. All doors have silicone gaskets. 28 degrees here, condensation just inside ash pan door.  Maybe a 1/2 ounce or so...  JWood insulated the 2 " ash door extrusion and it dried his up completely. I am going to do the same. Slim, I believe JWood has spoken with you about his 2840.

Mine set @ 190 +/- 8 degree.  May creep to 193, but no issues so far.  Hotter fire = less creosote.  Stay warm....

So your OWB is 150' from your house like mine ?   Do you go through a plate exchanger as well ?  Would it be OK to PM you my info to maybe discuss your setup in detail ?   Thanks for your posts....

Portage & Main / Questions to get my house up and running.
« on: December 16, 2014, 06:34:30 PM »
I'm going to try and get further along on my house install.  Shop working GREAT !   My wife says my priorities are mixed up.   I disagree.  Anyway, I have a 150' run of Logstor from boiler to house.  Enters house ~ 3' higher than boiler.  Going to use a plate exchanger to Xfer heat.  Here are a few questions I have that would help me make some decisions on a design.  I may have additional questions, so I'll apologize for any additional questions.   Thanks in advance for anyone's input.   Stay warm....

* HEAT EXCHANGER
        Has anyone ever bought / used a plate exchanger from GEA ?  Here is a link to size their plate exchanger ---> http://flatplateselect.com/site/pub/login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2fsite%2fDefault.aspx
        If not, what brands are well known ?  These GEA plate exchangers are too $$$.   Called about a 50 plate.  Somewhere ~ 800.00 !!!
*  GOING TO BUILD MY OWN HEADERS
       What is the optimal spread between 1" x 1/2" copper tees.  Should I just solder the T's with ~ 1" pipe between each T ?
       Will include zone valves.  Taco has a nice looking zone control module.
       May be a silly question, but does the pump run constant ?   I will assume not due to 'dead heading' the pump when no zone is calling for heat.  Control module actuates pump when a zone valve opens ?
*  OPEN vs. CLOSED systems
       Does anyone run a cast pump in an open system ?
       What are the pros / cons vs. the Taco Bumble Bee ( Delta T ) vs. Grundfos Alpha ( Delta P ) ?
*  SIZING THE PRIMARY LOOP TO HOUSE FROM BOILER
       Basically figure head for 300' of Logstor plus any fittings and plate exchanger.  Size pump for whatever gpm the plate exchanger suggests ?
       Use stainless or bronze pump for this loop or would a cast pump last many years ?
       This pump would run constant....
*  SIZING PUMP FOR CLOSED LOOP ( house )
      Add up all loops for all zones and figure head for the 1/2" pex for all zones.  Plus all fittings.
      Take this total amount of head and combine with 1/2 gpm for each loop ?   I was told that 1/2 gallon per minute is enough for each 1/2" pex loop.
      Say I have 8 loops.  This would be a 4 gpm pump at the figured head pressure ?

190 +/- 8.  Mine condensates when warmer outside.  No condensation when colder ~ 30 or lower.  I would be willing to report results and to be a pilot for a better gasket if asked....

Love it. Best investment, besides the OWB, so far. Recommend it to everyone I discuss cutting wood.

Portage & Main / Re: Bad aqua stat?
« on: December 08, 2014, 08:43:34 PM »
Ok. My mistake. Learned from this one. Long story short...  My 3 week old Wilo pump locked up, I guess caused an overheat and the aquastat was doing what it's paid to do. Here's what I don't understand,... Why did the temp probe read open?  If the temp is high, would this be considered normal?  I think the A419 displays ~5' higher temp than actual. The reason that the fan would not previously come on unless mech stat was turned past 220 was that the water was very hot. The local supplier I got the pump from did warranty the pump. I'll probably not purchase a Wilo pump again, but now I'm wandering if this shop loop should have a stainless or bronze pump due to being an open loop ??  I've talked to several local OWB owners close proximity to me and they all run cast pumps. Maybe it's just my luck. I owe PM for an A419 and sensor when it arrives, but at least I'll have spare. Thanks to Rory @ P&M for the assist on this one.  I will say, the 2840 held heat for an amazing 3 days with no blower. Water temp never got below 120'F.  Stay warm....

Pork loin in the heat exchanger ...  Great idea. I foresee the same followed by potatoes /carrots / onions and a couple pieces of bacon wrapped in foil.  :thumbup:

Has anyone ever made an area to set a pot of beans on an uninsulated section of copper ?  I'm thinking a copper plate soldered to the 1" copper would work. Low setting on a Crock Pot is about 170' ....

Thanks EE. I'll look the curves up on the 013. Did you figure head pressure prior to purchasing the 013?

I've read aLOT of posts on this subject and this may be boring or redundant to some, but I would like a veterans opinion. By recommendation, I'm going to make a primary loop to a house plate exchanger and a secondary loop inside the house out of the exchanger. I've got my 1/2 pex, UltraFin, #60 expansion tank, & Taco 4900 air separator.  I'm going to order the Taco bumble bee for the Delta T feature inside the house.  I did not see a BTU rating on the plate exchangers linked below. They do however comment on the number of plates and the corresponding uses. Should I be concerned with no BTU rating?  I'm looking at 2 - 50 plate exchangers below. I'm going to call tomorrow to ask more technical questions ( GPM. pressure drop, etc.). I would also like to know if anyone has head multipliers for 1" Logstor, 1" copper, 1/2" pex and corresponding 90's. My Logstor is 150' from OWB. I was given a 35 GPM / 42' head Armstrong bronze pump that I would consider using for the primary loop. Any comments much appreciated. Stay warm....

Just ordered one.  Put it off way too long.  I saw fdaddy's comment on comparing it to his X27 purchase.  I bought an X27 about 2 months ago.  If ANYONE is looking for a great splitting axe, do not buy anything but the Fiskars X27.  I bought mine from Home Depot, delivered to my front door for less than $60.  The sharpener on the other hand was more than twice that, but I think I will like it....  Stay warm.

Bad temp probe. Showed open with ohm meter / no resistance. A419 stuck @ 212F.  Bypassed A419 as directed by factory. Mechanical aquastat will not turn fan on unless I turn past 220F. Not going to do that. Down until replacement A419 and temp probe arrive from factory. No one in town has an A419. Only "similar" aqua stats. I will substitute in place of A419 tomorrow. KEEP SPARE PARTS!  Lessened learned. However, I know things fail, but really?  Both A419 and temp probe ...   I'm done now.

Did not "reset". I'm going to try and find one today during lunch. Hopefully that will fix.  Other comments appreciated.
