Equipment / Re: skid steer splitter
« on: September 22, 2013, 04:17:15 PM »
I made a splitter like the warrior about five years ago and wouldn't think about doing that job any other way.  See it isn't just the splitting but also the bucking up of the logs.  Get yourself a operator and stick him in the machine for a weekend just grabbing logs and swinging over to you with saw while you proceed make 2 cycle mix disappear.  Then come back and split the big stuff with the skid steer yourself dropping the chunks on pile next to owb, done.  Not much for manual labor, and makes quick work...

Only regret is I wish I had the sight window in the middle to center log easier without guessing.  I see another metal burning project soon...

You can run small pex lines over your subfloor to get very toasty floors with the hot water from your OWB, gauranteed happy wife and feet...

Central Boiler / Re: Over heated/auto draft stuck...
« on: January 02, 2012, 07:18:33 PM »
Well, last night when I posted this topic it was just after observing the temp being at 198*.  At that time I hadn't lost any water, I did observe a heat cycle and witnessed the dampener closing.  BUT, this morning guess what, nothing but ashes left and a whole lot of frozen water on the roof of boiler, water level down an inch in sight guage.
So, I took the cover off and found all parts clean and free of foreign contanimants.  Maybe a little corrosion on plunger shaft, and it would stick up sometimes when operated by hand several times.  I lubed the shaft and the pivot hinges and now it works super freely by hand and has gone through several cycles without problem the remainder of today.

Problem solved I hope.

I wonder if these units sit awhile prior to being shipped and or sold.  This is the only thing that I can imagine would contribute to the corrosion which seems to have caused it to stick open???

Yes, I agree, dealer getting a call tomorrow morning.
No snow to speak of this year so far, VERY windy today though-if that could have something to do with it, but I can't imagine. 25-35mph sustained and gusts of 45+

Well the new CL6048 had its first hiccup since installation and start up two and half months ago.  Tonight I went out to reload and was really surprised to see the temp at 198*.  Never seen higher than 187* before, so, upon opening door and seeing only glowing coals, scratching head and thinking for a minute, noticed that auto draft dampener in door was open.  I reached in there and "slapped" it with my glove a few times, nothing... I then shut the door to go get flashlight and bang, it slammed shut.  SO, now I am worried, WTF caused it to do that, is it a common problem, and is there any maintenance that I should be doing to prevent this?
Good thing is, wood must have been just about out since it doesn't seem to have lost any water.
Time to pull out the manual again...

My 6048 has been up and running for a total of a month and a half now and I also have a pretty good coating of "flakey" tar like black stuff coating all walls and ceiling baffles which I assume to be creosote.  A few times I have scraped at it and I comes right off but you just can't get it all and I don't think you really need to, you really can't get at the baffles at all.  Manual states it is normal and to be expected as long as it stays thin.  My buildup looks more like quarter and silver dollar sized "boils", anyone else?
Funny thing about the Ash-trol.  My dealer just got me my final bill for the boiler purchase and install.  It included the ash-trol product which I never recieved, I questioned him about it and he just dropped it off so I have only been using it for a few days and am not really sure what to be expecting it to do.  He said one of the jugs should last a season, but it also says to broadcast a heaping scoopful a day, this seems conflicting...?

Check out http://tempestwoodsplitter.com/.  Man I think they are the most forward thinking and efficient looking splitters I have ever seen.  Not the best set up for us OWB guys as we don't need that small of pieces, but the concept is awsome I think...
Just modify the "throw" to be 36" min, and make the "wedge" to produce larger end product and I'll take one, or maybe make one... ;D
Can't beat my current homemade splitter, the inverted type on a skid loader, lazy mans work, zero manual labor ;)

So, after reading this thread, I just happened to be driving by Harbor Freight and stopped in.  After also purchasing one of their MC meters and a infrared thermoeter I did a little cutting and splitting today.
I found that just cutting a round in half and testing netted a different reading than splitting the same round.  Example-ran a saw through a 12" piece of oak that has been down for a year in 10' lenghts and got a reading of 34%, split that same piece and get 25%.  It seems to change the farther in you push the probes?  Whatever doesn't really matter, seems to burn great but found it interesting.  Also tested many different spiecies that have all been down for a year and got results ranging from high teens to low thirties.
Thanks for the tip on this very inexpensive little tool.
BTW, for what its worth I have a log home that is about 25 years old, stuck the probe in one of my interior walls for the heck of it and got a reading of 10%.   ;)
I have also been playing with the Infrared Thermometer at all different points of interest. More on that later...

Inspections?  I didn't check with anything or anyone to see if it was ok to install my OWB.  Maybe my note is on the way...

Sounds like normal business practices to me.

I am just glad I got my "smoker" CB bought and paid for this year before you have to spend the big bucks for a gasser that I don't need

I second the above two comments.

I live back in the woods ya see,
it's just the woman, the kid, and the dog and me.
And a country boy can survive!

My OWB helps me do just that without the MAN telling me how, or trying to help
