Electronics / Aquastat open on rise or close on rise?
« on: November 15, 2012, 04:23:16 PM »
What I am working on now is the domestic hot water. I have a T that comes out of the bottom of the tank, then copper pipe come straight up, to which the aquastat is attached, then there is a small circulation pump and it passess through a heat exchanger and back into the top of the hot water tank. I now have everything working, except, I cannot figure out which setting to use on the aquastat. Do I want it to use the open on rise, or close on rise of temp? I would think close on rise of temp, but this does NOT give power to my circulation pump, and rise of temp does, but I would think that this will never shut off the pump if set this way. When I attach the wire to the open on rise screw, I have full power and the pump runs, but when I use the close on rise screw, i have enough power to only light up my test light, but NOT run the pump. Any suggestions?

Sorry for the delay in reply, and thanks to everyone who has helped me so far. So.... The pump, in theory, should not run all the time, as I do not want my hot water to be 180 degrees. However, I wired the thermostat and pump just as stated, but when I use the close on rise of temperature terminal, I do not have enough power to run the pump, NO MATTER where I set the thermostat. It does light up my tester, but will not run the pump. However, if I switch to the Open on rise of temperature terminal, I have power, and the pump runs, but this seems like it will never shut off this way... any suggestions? worst case scenario, how bad would it be to have the pump run continuously? I am open to suggestions, as I am quickly becoming frustrated.... lol :bash:

Electronics / HELP...... strap on thermostat/circulation pump wiring.
« on: November 13, 2012, 11:39:36 AM »
Let me start by saying that I am new to the forum and new to the world of the OWB as well. The stove is now set, the pipe is run, and I have plumbed the hot water circulation pump. Where I am struggling is with the wiring. I am using a White-Rodgers strap on thermostat and a Grundfos circulation pump. I was told to use a 14-2 wire (with 3 wires in total) to wire both the thermostat and the pump. So I was told to go from the junction box to the thermostat. The thermostat has only 3 screws labeled red (common), blue (open on rise of temp), and White (close on rise of temp). I then need to go to the pump which has 3 small tabs in which the wires will be inserted. they are labeled N, L, and ground . So my question is how the heck do I wire this thing? any help would be appreciated! :bash:
