Well after 48hrs of cool down was still hot as hell in there that refractory really holds the heat. I put a baffle 2/3 of the way from the back to the front. Reduced my grates to 1/2"x1" openings on 1 1/2" centers. And I added a secondary air system if this doesn't work I'm gonna try the plate on the back of the grates

The chimney is 24 inches above the firebox yes there is I burnt firewood in the firebox the back 1/3 completely burns up the firebox is a rectangle 24" wide 36" tall 42" deep I'm gonna try to plug the holes in the back Saturday gotta bring it down first and it holds heat for 48 hrs. A guy at work that has built a couple is thinking maybe a baffle would really help but would like more input the less time I'm in this thing the better cause if I'm in it it ain't working well unless the wife has a different idea

Would a baffle help to push the fire forward? And would a smaller grate opening help? I also considered an air baffle in the ash pan any suggestions?

I just finished my second build all new design the problem I'm having is it only wants to burn in the back. My firebox is 24x36 x42 lined with 12x12x3 70%alumina hard face tile. Grates are 1x2 flat bar on edge 1" apart running side to side. Chimney is 8" sch 80 pipe 2/3 of way back in the firebox extending 15" down into the box. Air inlet in naturally aspirated 2 3" sch 160 pipes running front to rear with 3/4" holes every 8". This is an air to air furnace
