Fire Wood / Re: December
« on: December 30, 2013, 05:29:37 PM »
It's been colder than normal here in Michigan also. Likewise I've burned a good deal of wood so far also, but it's way better than propane. Couldn't begin to afford to keep the house 74* when it's 5* outside.

Build some extensions for the sides and front and that would be a heck of a wood hauler. Price is right also.

On mine if I have the damper wide open it will shoot flames out the stack. Not very efficient if you ask me, sure theirs no smoke but it's forcing a lot of heat out the stack. I like the recommendation of running the fan just on the verge of smoking, that's what I shoot for on mine also.

That price doesn't seem bad at all if it's clean and runs good, same saw (MS271) brand new is $399 with the 18" bar. It's a "consumer" model so it wont be the best of the best, but it would make a good medium sized saw. I guess it depends on what your looking to use it for.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Why am I burning so much wood?!?

But if he's lost gpm's due to a damaged pump wouldn't the furnace blower be drawing more heat out of the slower moving water thus making his burner cycle more often to maintain temp thus burning more wood????

I got all my parts through Grainger.

If you have an adjustable damper for your blower try opening it up to allow more air to the fire. I had similar problems my first year running mine. Too much air and it turns into a fire breathing dragon though.

If you burn a lot of rounds and not much split pieces it can happen more. Try checking the blower damper and try different ways of loading rounds so they don't bridge as bad. A little more experience and you'll figure out what works best.

I use a hoe and a flat scraper for moving ashes or rearranging wood, also have a metal trash can for ash removal. No rack required I just lean them up against the side of the burner.

Equipment / Re: types of 2-cycle oil

I use Stihl oil for my saws, weed whips, and blower just so I only have one can of premix. For my snowmobile I use Mystic sea and snow oil cause it works and is cheap. I don't think their is a problem using marine oil as long as you're mixing properly.
