I have seen this before on a 3000 series. What I found was the chimney/upper plate was stopped up, cleaned the chimney and flu working great now.

I'm convinced with everyone's help that the 185 deg temp I'm running is not going to damage my OWB and the return temp is quite a bit higher than any of the numbers mentioned in y'all's post! I'm learning!

HeatMaster / Return Temperature question

I was reading another thread and there was a brief mention of the dreaded 140 degree return temp. What is the lowest the return temperature should be and could someone please explain why?

Mr. Crow do you have a really good coal bed in the bottom of your stove. If not try this! Turn the stove off, let the temp get way down say around 100 deg. then build a big honkin fire with plenty of wood inside the stove with the ash drawer opened slightly. When the fire gets to roaring turn it back on with the temp set a 170 deg. close the ash drawer and the fire box door let it run until it kicks off. Wa-law........a great big glowing ash bed! That's what fixed mine. If it continues to go out consult your dealer or someone smarter than me on this forum. :D

I am heating 2500 sq ft plus hot water. The house was built in 1990 so it has good insulation but is a siding home without a basement. I am not having any trouble with OWB, mater of fact I have had a fire in it since late August heating my water without a hitch, well after I got the coal bed established. As I said I've been running the temp at 180 with a 12 deg. differential since it got cold. Before it got cold I was running it at 175 with a 5 deg. differential when the weather was warm. I have used about 2 1/2 cords of wood since mid October or since cold air came to Western Kentucky. Its my first winter with this stove i'm just trying to see if i'm using about the normal rate on the wood and being the most efficient I can be. I will say this... my house is the warmest it has ever been in 20+ years I have lived in it. What used to be a 450.00 + heating/electric/gas log bill a month (all electric home) is now 102.00!!!! It don't get any better than that!

I am new to the forum really learning a lot from the many post I have read. I have been running my 3000 @ 180 degree with a 12 degree differential, stays lit makes good heat with no problems. But it seems to me that the stove uses more wood than I expected (I fill it as full as possible every 12 hrs on really cold day) does that sound normal or should I change my temp settings or put less wood in the stove?
