Heatmor / End of Season Cleaning
« on: March 26, 2014, 06:30:34 AM »
What do all of you do when the season is over and summer is here to prep you wood stove? I have just been making sure all ash is out of flume and box and auger area. I also try to get the boiler good and hot (190 degrees) to try to get the creosote sticky so i can scrape it off the inside and seams by door. I also check my anode rod to see if there is still enough for the next season. I don't put a bucket over the smoke stack since i have one of those sparker caps on it. I have heard of a guy who takes a small pump pesticide sprayer and fills it with new oil and sprays the inside of the stove to kind of season the metal and keep moisture from staying on the stainless steel. Just wanted to get everyones opinion for what they do.

Heatmor / Re: Wood consumption

I keep our house at 75 degrees (keeps our hedgehogs happy that we breed) all winter starting in mid October - May. I have a ~1,400 sq. ft. house and an older 2 1/2 car garage I keep at about 45 so i can do oil changes without freezing my hands off! Heat it with the 400 CSS and fill it once even when it is -20, if i use good oak. I use about 8-12 chords all winter (3/4 oak and 1/4 pine).

Heatmor / Sparker Chimney Cap (Necessary?)
« on: March 25, 2014, 08:54:23 PM »
I have the Heatmor 400 CSS. Good stove with lots of capacity. Just had a problem with the sparker cap on the chimney dripping moisture/ creosote onto the roof, rotting it out. Have not seen anyone with this spark cap and hear people just put a 5 gallon bucket over there stove during the summer months to keep water out. I think that the sparker cap is causing more damage than good. Thinking about getting a insulated pipe to stop this moisture accumulation.
