HeatMaster / Re: Heatmaster 4000 ss won't keep up
« on: January 13, 2015, 02:40:04 PM »
This is my first year heating with a owb. I have done a lot of experimenting with differential temps and draft settings. A. Few things that I found were.
Temp on at 178 off at 190. Hotter water hotter air to house so furnace didn't run as long. Boiler seemed to like this range.
The draft fan on the back has an adjustable damper. Found if I set it at 50 get about the best burn times on wood. If I go much over 50 blow a lot of heat out stack and really burned up the wood. If I went much under 50 the recovery times were longer so burned a lot also.
I'm burning elm oak walnut and maple. Heating 1800sf plus basement. Get about 14 hours burn time on full load of wood in stove.
Maybe look at damper setting if its adj. Try a little higher temp settings.

I guess I'm a little confused on the lines to the hx crossing. How do you control where air hits it if its in the entire duct. I thought only needed to make sure lines were opposite on water to water hx.

On the 5000 the draft on the back is adjustable. If I run my draft at 100 percent open I burn substantially more wood. Have been playing with it seems like 40 to 50 percent gives best burn times. If your damper is wide open maybe tighten up a little. Getting about 14 to 15 hour burn time. Burning oak elm walnut. Heating 1800sf poor insulated and basement and dhw. This is first season with boiler so I'm still trying to figure it out.

I did a lot of research and reading on this site and the net. I looked at most of owf brands in the area. I decided on the heatmaster 5000. So far I love it.
As far as why I chose it were personal likes. Wanted 409 stainless. Full length shaker grates. Ash pan. And a draft fan.
Do a lot of research look at as many brands as you can. If you know people that have one talk to them on their likes and dislikes on the model they have.

Fire Wood / Re: Slab Wood

I am burning sawmill scrap in my stove. Mixing with well dried hickory oak and elm. Burns well but get a lot of smoke if I load too much of it. Only other thing is a lot of cresote buildup as it still has a lot of moisture in the wood. What I get from mill for rest of year is gonna get put in shed to age for next year or the following year.
For the price I would say go for it.

HeatMaster / Re: MF 5000 fired up
« on: October 21, 2014, 05:27:50 AM »
Fired up my 5000 about 2 weeks ago. I'm loving it especially the hot water.
I talked to the guy that installed my furnace about damper setting. He said he had tried a lot of settings on his and for the most part just kept ending up at 50. What he had best luck with. That is where mine is set and has been doing excellent.
Probably not going to try adjusting until it gets colder and furnace is running more consistent. Mo. Weather is pretty inconsistent this time of year.

Congratulations. Fired my 5000 up on saturday. Just to knock chill off and heat hot water. First time with outdoor wood boiler. All I can say is the hot water is awesome sure beats what I was getting off the propane water heater.
As far as idle times not for sure haven't watched those. When it does fire up recovery is quick with the forced draft.
My setip boiler 40 feet from house foam filled 1 inch pex underground to basement. In basement to 30 plate exchanger that goes into a 40 gal. Water heater for dhw. Then to 20 x 20 hx. Then back to boiler. Didn't insulate pipes in basement.
Set my temps on boiler 185 off with a 20 differential.

I was in the same senario as you. Made up my mind in aug. Read everything i could online about wood boilers the more i read the more confused i became. Finally got to actually looking at stoves and talking to people that have them.. I looked at hardy, earth, central boiler, heatmor, acme and heat master. Each stove had its pluses to me and its negatives.
In the end i went with a heat master 5000. I determined i wanted 409 stainless over mild steel, shaker grates if i wanted to try coal, ash pan, and a rear mounted blower.
The hardest thing for me was the outlay of cash and wanting to make sure i tried to make the best decision i could so in a few years would not be trying to fix issues or have to look into a new boiler again.
The other selling point to me was the dealer that sold the units. He seemed knowledgable, answered my hundreds of questions and said if i had had any issues get ahold of him and he would talk me thru them or make a trip out and get any problems resolved. Dealer like that means alot.
In the end pick the one that appeals to you.

« on: September 18, 2014, 04:33:50 AM »
Thanks everyone for the welcomes and the positives on the stove.
There was a tempering valve installed on the hot water.
Now just gotta get colder so I can fire it up.

HeatMaster / New mf 5000 installed
« on: September 17, 2014, 02:50:27 AM »
After a year of pondering and debating finally took plunge and got my first owb.
After reading all i could on net and looking at several makes (earth, hardy, acme,cb,heatmor and heatmaster) decided on the heatmaster mf5000.
I had a 30 plate exchanger put in for domestic hot water.
It will be heating an 1800sqf foot house, parts of which were built around 1900s. It has a full basement and at least 3 additions. Thru a heat exchanger in the ventilation duct.
I hope i have as good luck with it as most on here seem too have with theirs.
Couldn't handle another winter like last years with those propane prices.
When i summer filled my tank told them i put in a owb and they said "your not gonna be one our good customers this year"
replied not as good as last year.
