Plumbing / Re: Is an air eliminator needed on an open OWB install.
« on: September 27, 2016, 07:46:22 PM »No it is not needed on an open system and with 15 feet of piping above your boiler I would bet you are getting air trapped in the top rooms, right. Air vents only work on presssurized systems.
Actually, just getting ready to hook everything up for the first time. Have a P&M 3444 about 60 feet from the side of the garage and about 4 feet below the house/garage slab level. ... running 1-1/4" rehau in the ground to the side side of the garage... then thru the wall and up the inside of the wall 9' and 30' across the ceiling the mechanical room.. down about 3 feet to the fphe for domestic hot water... then over to the fphe for the in floor heat....then up and return to P&M 3444.
I figure now is the best time to ask this question. I am still ok without and air eliminator in this design?
Thanks

Plumbing / Is an air eliminator needed on an open OWB install.

Is there a consensus on whether an air eliminator is needed or even useful on an open OWB system. Boiler is located maybe 10 to 15 feet below highest point in the supply line.
Thanks

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Wye strainer and Air Eliminator ?
« on: October 29, 2015, 12:14:38 PM »
What kind of air eliminator do you have ? Automatic or manual, ect?
I have already planned on a filler (ball valve with drain) in my mech room ... installed in the cold return to the boiler. I will use a washing machine type hose (dual female) to cross connect the to male threaded hose bibs and add backflow preventer on the domestic side just to be safe.... then I can fill/add from the garage... and I can the fill gauge from there.
Thanks

Plumbing / Please review my planned boiler hookup schematic
« on: October 14, 2015, 07:51:51 PM »
I will be getting my new P&M 3444 delivered in a couple weeks and am looking for a review of the hookup drawing I did. Please let me know if I've missed anything, have to much stuff or suggested improvements. I am heating 3300sqft in slab and DHW. I am located in northeastern MN. I did my own heat loss calc and it showed I need about 150k BTU. Had it validated by a pro and he came up with the same number.
I am getting quotes from 2 different installers to hook this up but I am considering doing it myself. I am pretty handy so I was wondering if this the kind of project a handy owner can do safely or should I be going with a pro ? It seems pretty straight forward.
THanks
Kelly

Portage & Main / Slab dimensions for new BL3444
« on: September 07, 2015, 07:38:32 AM »
I have a new BL3444 at the dealer. Waiting for delivery after excavation. Based on the feedback i received to a previous question it seems I should pour a concrete pad to set it on. Does anyone have specs for their slab and if they would make it bigger or smaller if they could do it again ? (I am located in Northeast Minnesota)
Thanks

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Lessons learned or tips/advice on best location for boiler
« on: September 04, 2015, 08:22:15 PM »
New outdoor boiler owner here. Portage & Main BL3444. The House excavation just started so its a clean slate to work with. Looking for tips, advice, lessons learned from the group on the best location to place my boiler.
For example :
How far from the house ?
Proximity to wood supply ?
Direction to face the door ?
How much cleared area around the unit ?
Concrete pad or just 4 blocks ?
or anything else you might think is valuable.
I guess the one thing I know is I will be placing it downwind from the house. I have talked to my insurance co and they said that there are no restriction on distance from house for a wood boiler.
Thanks
Kelly
