Equipment / Plumbing Log Splitter
« on: January 15, 2015, 06:04:14 AM »
Getting ready to hose up "The Hedge Hawg" and wondering what you guys have used for thread sealant on the NPT fittings? I was advised by a hydro guy to use Loctite 569 but will have to order it as I can't find it locally.
Thx

This is just something that was brought to my attention by James at Spiltez. Looking at your setup I'm guessing changing the hydro filter will be a little bit of a bitch since it sits below the oil level of the tank???
His recommendation was to mount it as high as possible so you only loose what's in the filter.
FWIW
Still think it is a super system!

Home Made / Is it worth the trouble
« on: December 02, 2014, 05:53:15 PM »
Building a "homemade" unit. Will be close to 18" of free space from rear of firebox to rear of water jacket. Thinking of running the flue horizontally from the fire box out the back of the water jacket for a clean out but cutting a saddle inside the water jacket and bringing the flue pipe out the top of the stove.
I want to grab the free heat off the flue to heat water so I am also thinking of wrapping the vertical portion of the flue pipe with 1" copper tube to bring my return water in thru.
Would return water to top of jacket into copper coil heading down around flue pipe then turn the copper back up so it exits at top of water jacket.
Would then send water back to house from bottom of jacket to keep circulation flowing in tank.
Thought's?
Thx

Fire Wood / Re: Locust Thorns
« on: December 02, 2014, 05:19:34 PM »
Thanks for the tips.
I have heard that gerting or ringing the tree would make the thorns drop. I also was told about the burning deal, would like to see that video!
Thx

Fire Wood / Locust Thorns

I have numerous locust trees on property, some are 30"+ at base. The bad part is they are loaded with 3-4" thorns that are hell on tires. Any ideas on dealing with them?

Plumbing / Sidearm vs Plate Exchanger
« on: November 28, 2014, 02:02:24 PM »
Sorry for my ignorance but what is the difference?
I am thinking plate exchanger. one feed to it then on to furnace. Does the sidearm require something different?
Pro and cons?
How do you size a plate exchanger 20/30/50 plate as to what you need for DHW and on to a forced air furnace?
Thanks in advance for any help!

That must happen more than I would have thought, I got the same engine for the same reason. I just picked up a 30" stroke, 2.5" dia ram cyl with a 40" long body yesterday, I don't know what it came off of but it was all I could do to get it in the truck.
I am really against bending over to wrestle logs or pick up splits so I am going for a build like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HYrMBRFa-wc
I was figuring a 22gpm pump but not sure on the brand, seems to be a significant price diff between the Haldex and others. Is it worth it? I usually subscribe to the "Buy Once Cry Once" theory but wondering.
I am fabbing up my own tank, will be about 21 gl.

Super Job! Your attention to detail and design is better than factory. Was wondering if you would share what you used for motor and pump and if you did achieve the cycle time you expected?
