Sharpening a chain isn't a huge deal by hand. I'd rather hand sharpen a chain without guides. Takes me about 8 minutes. Then take the time to disassemble everything and still do rakers by hand. Its just so easy to keep them sharp by hand every time I put gas in.
I've cut at least 50 10"+ trees since January. So frozen wood, and still have the chain that came on my saw on it. Bought about the same time
I am careful about what and where I cut. But have logged or firewood cut at least 50 cord of wood I'd guess with that chain.
Don't get me wrong, it's not pristine. But it's still cutting good.
Cut through 2" of ice and log last cut and I cleaned her up and still cutting.
I guess my point is, why run the chain till it needs sharpening? Keep it sharp and keep cutting. Just seems silly to me to have 10 chains that you have to sharpen, when if you can keep 1 sharp constantly?
That being said, I always have 2 saws and extra chains. But I also have a "chainsaw kit"
Which is a plastic tote that holds my saw, gas, bar oil, felling wedges, hammer, files, tools,tow strap, splitting wedges and maul, and toilet paper. (Gotta be prepared ) and I keep it in or on my truck at all times.
If I take a different truck? I grab the case and have everything.

I cut stumps waste high. Makes em easier to pull out. And it's comfortable to cut at.

I'll have plenty. Right now I just need to get the logs outta the way. We cut 5 cherry today. And some red oak. Then some sassafras went in the fire and mystery wood onto the misc pile. Cut about 15 trees today.
Honestly I've been giving away the wood and still can't get it hauled off fast enough!

Today I was able to get 2 tri axle dump truck loads hauled out. There was more cut but, when 2 guys are cutting, hauling, and operating a machine, things take time.
The dump bed is 16'longx4'highx8'wide. Stacked heaping with logs.
Stacked and split nicely I'm sure it doesn't add up to as much as it looks, but, a lot of wood none the less.
We processed 4 trees today and made apx 4 loads of 8"+firewood
The first load was all red oak and large logs. 20"+ second load was the same wood but 8-20" all quality firewood in my opinion.
We sold the loads for 150 delivered.

Well I'm officially done talking to timber buyers. No shows and he hawing are apperently the order of business.
So I'm cutting it all down. I gotta get it done.
So what is firewood selling for these day's. I'm in northern indiana.
I figure the boy has to cut and split it anyways, he may as well make a buck.
Also, does anyone prefer buying whole logs? Or is seasoned split the only marketable wood?
I'm cutting red and white oak and cherry. Tomorrow hopefully a few dozen trees will be on the ground and processed into logs.

I have to agree that tractor vs skidsteer is only decided by intended use to yourself.
Pulling and pushing power, my farmall 300 will pull both a t190 and a 259b3 backwards and forward all day long. But definitely wouldn't in soft ground. Where tracked machines Excell.
I have a full hydraulic loader on my farmall and it lifts, moves and drags logs just fine. But doesn't have cab heat or radio!
Skidsteer wise, tracked machines are the way to go. Attachments can be done from in the seat and number in the thousands. But the farmall still gets used where tracked machines would be to small or under powered.

We run a cat 259 2 speed skidsteer at work and that things a joke! It's nice when it works but that's fairly rare. 500 hours and both drives have been rebuilt, fuel pump capped out twice. Randomly the park break engages. Only counter rotates when it wants to and when it does is usually violent.
We also run a Bobcat t190 and it's got 3500hrs and has only needed maintenance.
I can't say what's best for anyone, but I definitely wouldn't be shopping at cat.

I know nothing about the rtvs. But I a assume it's a small single acting pump. My thoughts would be that the money and effort to plumb it up, while an impressive project, would be better spent using a fully contained plow setup.
Ex, western V plow. 1000$ used with harnesses and hydraulics ready to go. Cut the plow down as you need and drive it like a bandit.
You can run valves off the outlet of another valve. But if your using a valve ahead of the second valve, the easier cylinder goes first. And depending on pump flow and load the second valve may not get power until the first valve is not using flow.

The way I understood it is, since we closed the road, it needs to be "safe". But if we put our driveway around say a guard rail to close the road we can use whatever for a gate. I kinda get it I guess.
But I've been welding my tail off, still not on anything for myself though. :\ I tried to post a picture but can't figure that out.

We are working on a similar project. 8 pickup loads out and we've barely made a dent in what was already down. One tree filled 4 trucks and the other half is still standing.
No firewood shortage here.

Starke county indiana, pretty much the meth capital of the world, the way I gather it.
Since they took down my "gate" we found 4 more meth related items. In different levels of snow. Wow. I'm glad we're are worried about protecting them.
We have this problem somewhat on my own behalf, it's been raw land since baby jesus made it (that's just an old reference, not religious.) And we knew coming in that everyone used it.
But now that it's owned and being cleared the traffic is falling off fast. And several plate #'s are already reported.
Then damn trees won't quit falling across the road lol.
I'm all for the challenge and it'll be worth it in the end. I been shot twice and am still falling trees and breaking colts. Someonewho wants to use my land for fun? Yeah, they'll learn.
I don't want to come off as a hard ass, but I won't let this dream end without a fight

Tomorrow we are putting up a traditional farm gate, much to my dismay, but anything is better then nothing.
County highway did bring out barricade to close it off this week. Which is cool of them. But today we found more meth stuff. I think this is gonna get ugly before it gets better. This will be the 5th time we've found meth making material on the property.

Ok. Apparently the gate was not safe if someone was to hit it. :\ that's kinda the point of a gate isn't it? To prevent access.
We'll we got everything back, but have to put up a more conventional gate. All the involved departments are fine with us closing it off. But it needs to be a more "friendly" gate. Heck the highway dept even offered to send guys out to help put it up.
Apperently this is all results of a nagging neighbor. And I think I know which one. What's super handy is survey says we own their front yard all the way to the front of the house. If we keep having problems, I might have to bring that up.

Wife's headed down to the highway dept tomorrow. And the building commission. Also the state police post and county police. We'll get it figured out.
I'm not sure how someone trespassing has the right to complain about what I'm doing on my property. But we'll figure it out.
I'm still surprised how many big trees are down across the drive since yesterday. Must be beavers

Heck I'll tell you anyway.
County, state, and dnr all gave the ok to put the gate up on our property. We set it 150' in with a trail cam behind.
Go down today after a 1 hour tractor drive to find the gate Mia.
Wtf! Signs reflectors and all. Gone.
Apperently it wasn't safe. Is what we were told by the county sherrif. But not not safe to who is my question? ! Oh I'm sorry I boned trespassing meth heads!
