Equipment / Re: Question for Skid Steer Owners
« on: March 14, 2015, 05:02:32 AM »
Well I can't answer the question of tractor or bobcat. I have both and use both. I have a Bobcat s650 with root grapple and I love it. Most often I cut logs in the woods to 8 foot long then pick up as much as the grapple will hold and drive down the trail. I don't like skidding them, picks up to much crap on logs. I also pick up 8 foot logs and place them right in front of the burner, cut and toss in,  less handling.

I love my tractors too but down side is you can't see the bucket or quick attach.  And need larger room to maneuver.  I can do way more log handling with the skid steer than I ever could with a tractor. But for the jobs my tractors do I couldn't use a skid. Sooooooo buy them both. It's only money, they will print more.   :photo: ;D

I heated my house for years with a fireplace and wood furnace in the basement.  I now split poplar and bass wood cuz with the OWF I don't need the heat just the flames.  I like to sit by the fire when it's snowing out or cold just for the feel.  Don't miss the mess at all though

I run Bobcat skid steers and New Holland tractors they always seem to start even on the coldest mornings.  If I know I will be running them and they are by power I will plug them in the night before. Most of the time I forget and they still start.  New batteries help as the glow plugs draw a lot.

Good thing your getting a heater, otherwise the door will fog up and you'll never see. That sounds like a good price for what your getting

Foam fill. It's the way to go in my opinion.  Would a come along help to stretch the tracks or a few comealongs?

Well I have had the new boiler up and running for about two weeks now.  I had a 5036 and now 6048.  The two major differences I see are burn time and size of log.  The weather had been rather mild for our area highs around 30 and lows in the 20. And I was able to get over 24 hours burn time.  Heating 2800 ranch, full walk out basement and DHW.  In fact I went out of town for a night and loaded it in the morning I left and it was still very full the second evening. I am also able to through in very large diameter logs.  I hate splitting big logs, so I had some old birch and oak that was 24 plus stuff and knotty.  I cut it in to short pieces 8 inch long or so. And load the chips in.  In the old burner I could do this but could not get enough packed in to burn this stuff well.  Also the coal bed is enormous compared to the smaller, I know this is management thing. But I like having a bed that never goes cold, helps to dry and burn the bigger stuff. Glad I bought a 6048 before the EPA bans the sale of them.

I would get them sometimes in my other stove, I had read someone else posted about cleaning the buildup in the stack and then they got better draft.  I got to wondering if my stack had buildup as I had never cleaned it. Just sold it and took off the stack, clean as a whistle.  Fire away

I'm in northern Wisconsin. I have never heard of this New Jersey you speak of.  LOL I can understand a blower to reignite the fire after long idle times.  For my that would be spring and fall. So far I'm happy as a clam without the blower, but it it cold and it's cycling a fair amount.

My dealer said he would strongly recommend not putting a fan on? I questioned him long and hard about it and in the end decided not to.  A fan will help burn bigger logs and wetter wood and will also give you faster recovery.  The down side of a fan on a classic is pulling in cold air.  So there is some extra fuel use to compensate for that. How much IDK.  If you run to low on fuel you will pump cold air in and cool the water.

As far as recovery time like every one else I like to see my stove up to temp.  But I'm starting to think, "what do I care if my stove sits at 165 all day?"  As long as it doesn't drop below 140 where I have condensation.  I still haven't come to a solid conclusion on this thought yet but for now I decided not to add the blower.  That may change when I add my shop to the boiler next year???

We're not having the bitter cold here. Last night was 22 and rising. It is 32 out now.  The cold will return though. I filed the unit at about 10 pm. Mix of big hardwood and small split pine. I did not pack it tight like I always had to with the 5036 and at 8 am there was enough wood to last the day and make a great hardwood coal bed for the night tonight.  Very happy. It took 4 hours to bring the water up from 55 to 185.

Now that the switch is done I can spend the day in the woods running tubing to tap Maple trees

Got home at 3 this afternoon with the brand new 6048  the water temp in the 5036 was down to 130.  Shoveled it out unhooked it and got the new beast up and running. Fire started in the 6048 by 6 and it's up to 120 now and rising. The thing is Giant compared to the old one. I think I will fill it up tonight and maybe again in February. Took forever to fill with water.

We have five girls and my wife thought it would be a great idea to have a New Years Eve party this year for kids only, 15 girls.  :o I came in from the boiler and took off my heavy sweatshirts as two girls were coming out of the mud room bathroom. One of my daughters friends said are we having smoked fish at this party?

What about burning up more of the coals when wood runs low?

Just remember that in a negation the first person to talk price is always the looser.

Central Boiler / Blowers on classics
« on: January 09, 2015, 05:17:03 PM »
I'm sure this is discussed on other threads but here goes. Getting a new Central boiler classic 6048. Should I add a blower to it or not? What are the pros and cons you guys have found?  My classic 5036 does not have a blower just draft.
