Central Boiler / Re: central boiler cl5036 for sale

Ridgekid, ok now I get it...thats a different type of stove you had. My FIL has a craft wood stove insert that I had thought about using to heat the basement. Its more of a large space heater according to everything I read. Heats one room hot and other rooms get some heat from transfer but thats not as nice as the one you had. I was gonna open the door to the basement and maybe put a fan in the door to blow air up...I just can't see it would heat the house like the unit you had (being ducted and all). My bet is you like your new owb better especially since its outside and no mess inside?

Ridgekid, how did heating your house from a basement do for you? I also have a basement that is mostly in ground and is unfinished and have considered putting a stove in because my Father in law no longer wants to use his and he said come get it if I want it. Researching it has led me to believe the ground would absorb to much heat and it would not transfer upstairs that well. But I have read from a couple people say it worked fine but I think they may have had a finished basement. I had thought about putting the stove in a basement fireplace and running stainless double wall flue up the chimney. My father in law has some of the flue as well...I would have to add maybe 12 more feet because of the height difference.

Central Boiler / Re: central boiler cl5036 or a heatmaster mf 5000e

Hey, I am also looking at a Heatmaster HE model. I know one guy that has one and he loves it. I think they make sense as far as the extra turn in the unit for maximum heat transfer. The biggest reason I like them is the new ones are 409 water jacket and box. I feel like if you had to burn some green cuz you didn't cut enough wood it would do a better job than gassifiers too. Seems like the ash pan would be good for cleanout also...anyway I think you can't go wrong with either one of the boilers you are looking at cuz they are both big name boilers. I have been looking at a used Cl5036 and still haven't decided which one to go with either...good luck.

I would add it to a forced air system so I would have to add the coil in the duct, also would add an exchanger for hot water, and maybe add a second coil for an upstairs bonus room but might would just leave it alone..not sure. I also keep looking at doing a water storage system in basement...but all of them so expensive including owb. Biggest thing for me is I am not sure I really want to be a slave to the wood thing. I have been looking at these for over a year and still not made a decision and winter is coming. I think I go through about 1800 to 2000 a year in lp fuel so it would take at least 3 to 4 years to break even if I don't buy any wood which is the plan.

Yes, I would be installing it myself. I like to do most all that type stuff that I can. I still change my own oil too..lol. Never have liked the thought of a jiffy lube tenager running the oil pan bolt back on .....zip zip zip ...Just like to know if anything goes wrong, I am to blame. Sounds like it might not be such a bad deal then...just gotta way whether or not I want to take that plunge.

Two pumps are included, I don't know bout the warranty transfer. No heat exchanger in deal so I would have to buy that and the pex. Biggest question is the warranty....they are selling because they are moving. I just don't like to pay close to a new cost for used stuff since I don't know how it was treated, but if they come down a little more I might. Speaking of support....Benjamins work fine...LOL

Well I haven't took the plunge yet for an owb and there is a cb 5036 near me for sale. They want 4600 for it with stainless chimney and two pumps included, no other extras. Its 2.5 years old. They have used it 2 seasons. I think I could get it relocated for about 500.00 then add 1000.00 for underground piple and HX, maybe more. Not sure its a great deal but it aint too old. So 6k for a 2.5 year old system....sounds too high to me..but what yal think?

Yeah Oldchenowth,
I have considered a gassifier....course that drives up the price around 2k or 3k more..uggg. I like the P&M from the web views of it but I have seen a HeatmasterSS thats not a gassifier and for 3 k less....I am leaning that way if I even take the plunge... biggest reason is it has back and forth airflow which helps make it more efficient, saves some money and I can burn some green stuff too. I think I spend about 450.00 a month on gas..for around 4 months total so thats a little slower on the payback. I gotta decide whether to take the plunge or not within the next couple months I guess. What boiler do you use?
Just another note...If money was no consideration....I like the garn unit.....but pricey as heck!

blakeusa, I believe you. I don't have a boiler yet..still researching..but I can see that I would have a love/hate relationship with one. Hate to do whats required for the seasons worth of fuel..but love it once I did. I can see that 15 cords would really get to me and I would probably buy some too. I was hoping to get by with burning maybe 7 or 8 here in NC but who knows...lol
The other thing is the initial investment...man I really don't want to spend 8 to 11k and realize I can't wait for it to be paid for so I can buy wood or sale it..

Now that is what I would call blessed/ lucky as heck and a perfect time to buy a boiler. Wow, is all I can say. I wish I could get that lucky...it would be my luck that the county would annex the property...pay me half of what its worth...increase my taxes on the rest because of an improvement that I might could use and by taking my land reduce any ability to cut my own wood to heat with..lol.

How many cords of wood do you end up with on a triaxle load? I think I got enough wood around here but to just cut what I can that falls, weed out the less desireable species and such but to have a load dropped by the stove and already felled good wood....thats a plus that may be worth some money.

Sorta new to the site but just can't stand spammers and wondering can they be done away with. This may already be in progress but just can't stand posts that don't involve something to do with the site name.

Sorry Bill G, I meant when you get yours installed could you post some pics? I did see Karls and it looked nice. I also talked with P&M and got a drop ship price on a non-gassifier unit but still researching. Sorry for the confusion.

OK not being used to heating with wood, I decided to see what it would be like to cut and split some. After 4 hours of hard work for both me and my son, I have a cord of wood. Granted I split some just because I wanted to and probably could feed a boiler without splitting (I just wanted to see what effort it took to split a cord). I figure I am 1/8 of the way there for next year if I only use 8 cords for the winter heating. I can tell you that if I buy a boiler....I WILL end up buying a gas splitter..lol..not that I mind the work but hey, if I can do it faster thats a good thing. I figure a 20 ton should do what I need to do..any suggestions?
I really wish I could estimate how much wood I would really use. I read all sorts of usage...I know it depends on the house and location and temperatures and stuff. I have a well insulated house but nervous about usage before buying a boiler ..don't want to regret it...
