Will I burn less wood if I dont run my circ pump 24/7
« on: October 07, 2012, 04:09:02 PM »

I have two problems I need help with. I was wondering if I would burn less wood if I wired my pump to shut off when my house gets warm, because as of rate now it justs says on. And Ive noticed that its hard to keep my owb at the right temp and was wondering if thats because the pump runs continuously?  Thanks

if your underground lines are not well insulated then yes you would save wood by having your pump shut off with the house thermostat. You say you have a hard time keeping your boiler at the right temp? if yoru boiler is overshooting the shut off temp then you are leaking air into the fire box and the fire is not dying down properly. if your OWB is cooling off too much then your are losing heat to the ground from poorly insulated underground lines (likley)

Pumps run continuous on nearly every modern model and we don't have those issues.

As Willie says you have other issues and probably have poor line as well

The pump or pumps (some may have 2 off the owb) They run 24 hrs seven days a week....Sounds like to me your burning wet wood or something..Fire isnt big or hot enough to keep up with demand..Whats the right temp u want and the temp your getting?

I am not a boiler expert but I do know a lot about them and what works.  You have to get the boiler shutdown quickly but snuffing out all the air.  I have a flapper connect to a solenoid that is wired to the aquastat so if closes off the air to the blower so it doesn't keep feeding the fire.  I did a ton of research and put in a handmade 20 ft. steel coil that my return water runs through before dumping into my tank.  I burn over half of the amount of wood that I use to.  It acts as an on demand hot water heater and have it perfected to where I get super heat of approximately 70 degrees hotter than what the water enters at.  It's all about regulation, style, and length.  It is a true wood saver and know noone that does it.

My water circulating pump runs all the time. I have nearly zero heat loss from supply to return.

I think you would naturally have a little overshoot when it shuts down. This isn't like a gas furnace that shuts off the heat/gas instantly. Even closing off the air it would take a little time before the fire dies down. Especially in warmer weather. I have mine set at 170 shut off and I sometimes see 180 by the time it settles down.
