E-Classic Owners
« on: February 22, 2013, 04:16:54 AM »

I own an e-classic 1400.  This is my 2nd year operating it.  During my weekly cleaning, I scrape the area where the walls and floor meet to remove the creosote build up.  However, the area where I have the most difficulty reaching is the angled wall of the by-pass door as well as the upper corners where the sides meet the roof of the firebox.  What tricks do you guys have that I may be able to incorporate into my weekly cleaning regimen?  I would really love to scrape those areas (all of the seams actually) to keep the creosote build up to a minimum during my weekly cleaning or a quick scrape when I filling for the day/night.  How do you reach the upper seam where the back wall meets the roof of the firebox?

Thanks guys.  Roger

I have a bar that I bend the end of to get in the back there is a lip near the top that builds up, I also use a broom handle to keep the large holes the the back clean, the end of the handle is wedged, I push it in the hole turn it a few times and the holes are back to normal.

Hey Johnnyb, nice to hear from you again.  I trust your eclassic 1400 is operating great for you?  Mine is running great.  The oil furnace hasn't operated at all since I first fired her up in early Oct. for the heating season.

My main concern is the build up on that "porch" where the bypass door is located as well as the seam where the side walls and back wall meet the roof of the firebox.  I pretty much got the air holes figured out where it only takes a few minutes of poking with a screwdriver to make sure they clean and that includes the side holes.  Another area where creosote is a problem for me is just below the door opening inside the firebox.  I can easily keep the seams clear where the walls meet the floor on both sides and the back but the one below the door opening is a real pain in the backside.   Oh and while you're here.  Do you think it would be smart for me to invest in some the Ashtrol that CB sells?  Do you know if it works well or is it a placebo thing?  Thanks.  Roger

I don't use it , but it has been running great I was playing with the coal bed too much, I have the burst set at like 30 minutes I am burning 95% pine and I have not had to relight in in 4-5 weeks, ya that porch in the bad seems like such a bad design, it has to be really cold in there to get that clean, heading up to bretton woods this weekend ski and snow

I use a screwdriver to scrape all of the seams.  I do this every week.  It's so darned messy that if someone had an easier way to clean it, I thought I would ask.  But, in order to clean that "porch", I have to remove all of the hot coals into a metal bucket (save these for rekindling the fire) remove all of the ash and scrape all of the seams of creosote build up.  I don't get them 100% perfectly clean, but 90% is close enough for me.  When I get ready to put her to bed for the summer, I'll take the time to get them to as close to 100% clean and then coat them with 40 weight motor oil.  Perhaps I'm being to anal regarding my cleaning techniques but I figure that I spent a good amount of money for the thing and it darned better last me more than a few years.
