Door rope gasket
« on: October 17, 2013, 06:26:11 PM »

In the process of replacing door rope gasket on an old Dahl owb..I bought 3/4 inch..and it ended up being way too small..ended up wasting 30 bucks.  Is there and easy way to measure to find out the size I would need.  Don;t have a manual and cant find any info on the boiler online..Thanks for any help

Not sure, there is various gaskets that all say 1" but can be far different...

Make sure to never stretch it as it goes in

Yeah like Scott said..Never stretch the gasket out.. If you do, You'll find you will have plenty extra left over, and you be like whats up with the extra excess gasket lol..Do you still have the old gasket?

For those who want to try a really nice door gasket, we now have 1 inch silicone coated rope gasket available.

Think about it, what causes creosote to build up on your rope gasket, it is the air being drawn through the rope and then condensing, creating creosote, the silicone does not breath as the rope is completely coated all the way around, stop the air from getting through the rope, the rope stays flexible and keeps a tight seal. Yes it will last much longer, it is a new product for us so I can't say how much longer but I can tell you it makes a world of difference in our gassers.

The one I saw at the shows looked like the silicone was added after the rope was in, is it or is it completely coated before instalation as ours is Scott

Coated my rope gasket with high heat silicone last year and it's still in really good shape.

So it's OK to coat the door gasket with high temp. Silicone on the firebox side and it will hold up to the high fire box temps and help seal the door?

Yes it is ok, either allow a thin coat to harden before closing the door or put wax paper on it to keep from sticking to the door frame while it hardens.

I was going to coat it last year and put masking tape on rim so it would form a perfect shape for seal but didn't think silicone would hold up to temps but I will try this year thanks.
