Bought a house with a OWB, Questions
« on: October 23, 2013, 11:57:54 AM »

Hello,
Just bought an old farmhouse with a Hydro Fire 48. New to owning and running an OWB and looking for tips and advice. I have read many posts and have a good idea on how to stack and the importance of a good bed of coals. I do have a question on burning during the mild months. I think I have been loading to much wood. With it only being 53-58 during the day do I still load it to the top or just half to keep my coals red? The draft control opens if the temp drops below 180 so I was loading it full to keep that temp up. I don't want to burn more wood then I should be burning.

Thanks for any help. Great site.

Ditto, you will burn less wood as the fire burns cleaner the less wood you put in, smoke is nothing more than unburned fuel.

Thanks for the info. I am now keeping count of the logs I put in so I can track my usage. I'm only heating the house. The previous owners didn't add a side arm to the hot water tank. I'm looking into getting one next year.
