Christmas traditions
« on: December 24, 2013, 11:03:01 AM »

Hi all, I thought I'd share something special that would happen on Christmas Eve when I was child.  Perhaps you folks have a tradition or special memory you'd like to share.  Here's mine;

Every night for about a week before Christmas, my dad would make up some excuse that he had to check on the animals in the barn.  On Christmas Eve it was no different, dad made excuse to check on the animals, only this time Santa would do a fly-by.  We knew it was him, we heard the sleigh bells ringing.  Mom said it was Santa checking on us kids to be sure we were behaving ourselves.  Of course dad fed into it a bit more when came back from the barn; "Did you hear that"?  It must have been Santa"!  "I heard him too"!  Now, I have 8 siblings.  Mom said the excitement in our eyes was incredible.  The down side was trying to get us to settle down to go to bed.  Oh, we went bed, we just didn't fall asleep that easily.  We learned when we got older that dad had a  set of bells hidden away in the barn for this occasion.  He always worried we would find them and spoil the fun.  We never found them.  Merry Christmas, everyone!  Roger

My dad did something kinda similar. We grew up Catholic, and early in December (I think on the 6th) St. nick (my dad dressed in a Santa costume) would visit us and usually leave us fruit, nuts, and some candy.
My dad put his own spin on it though. From outside a living room window, he'd make all six of us get on our knees and fold our hands and pray. We'd know that when the praying was done, there'd be snacks on the back porch!

Merry Christmas Roger!
