Ok here's another thing worth checking out.
Google Stirling Engine or look it up on YouTube , engine uses heat for fuel I wonder if a guy could figure a way to make a wood boiler/Stirling Engine powered log splitter?

If a guy sat around at the base of a tree with a piece of grass sticking out of his mouth at 4:20 in the after noon and pondered that for a while, I would be willing to put money on it that he could come up with something that would work.

Yup, stirling engines have been around for a long time.

Power to weight ratios makes it hard to beat a good turbo charged diesel though, if you want ultimate power to weight horsepower go with a turbine.

Just dropped a $4800 dollar reman deutz diesel in the skid steer so I think i'll pass on a stirling powered one.

Haha I know but they may be the cats meow for a guy who wants to get off the grid, I'm not so worried about that right now!

If I was to get off the grid, I'd buy a seed oil press and make my own bean oil then burn that in the diesels. Or maybe build a methane digester and let the cows generate my electricity.

Rudolf Diesel's original engine burnt peanut oil.

It would have to be quite reasonable in price and maintenance, for the most part I've found it cheaper to buy electricity than generate it. But I'm in a different situation than the average homeowner, have 200 amp single phase at the farm and 200 amp three phase, both could stand to be upgraded to 400 amp services. So by time I look at generators that could replace either or both you're looking at a considerable chunk of change.
