Hot water heater
« on: May 21, 2014, 06:19:34 PM »

I'm building pressure in my hot water heater and it's blowing out of the pressure valve. The water heater I had before was doing the same thing. It never does it while I'm running my stove with the exchanger. Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this?

Steve.b,

You need to install a expansion tank in your system. The County water Co. came around and put new water meters in with check valve or anti-back flow preventers. Them we had to install expansion tanks to prevent over pressure.

I don't know your exact setup on your domestic water heater, but I would bet that is the problem.

Hope this helps!

If you are not on a well you will need an expansion tank. If you on a well I would check the plumbing and make sure there isn't a check valve anywhere between the water heater and the pressure tank.

I am assuming you have a plate heat exchanger for DHW. The reason that didn't blow the relief is because the water goes into the tank hot (already expanded)
When the water heater is running normally, the water goes in cold and expands when it gets heated.
