New owner here, finally
« on: July 15, 2014, 03:56:18 AM »

Just installed my Heatmor 200CSS, used Rehau piping underground (85ft) house is around 2000 sqft 2x4 walls lots of glass and I am curious on a guesstimate on how much wood to have on hand? Been reading here for awhile and it seems maybe 12-14 facecords?

Sounds like it might be close but keep cutting for next year. ;) Give us a few more details though. Where are you located, age of the home, heating DHW, type of wood and moisture.
 Congrats on the purchase

I agree with crow, but unfortunately this is one of those questions that no one can really answer there are just to many variables. Congrats on that purchase

Best estimates will come from what you were paying before to heat with. What were you heating with, what type of fuel and cost? Also face cord around here means Half of a cord. I got through 11-12 fulls cords per year heating a 200 year old semi insulated 2400 sq ft colonial in New Hampshire.

We are in North Central Wis., we went thru approx. 1200 gal lp and 4 tons of pellets between 2 stoves ( finished basement and and room above garage also finished) we keep it around 70 and with our global warming keeping us below zero in winter, house built in 1983 but not real well insulated and 1 wall is 23' high of glass in living room. We also hat our insulated garage on house below the one room to about 60 degrees. We bought the OWB because our fearless leader is having them banned Jan 1. Sounds like I will need more cut to make this winter.

I would recommend to keep cutting provided you have more available at this time. You will have a much better idea at the end of the next season what you need for an average amount to have, but extra won't go astray.
But I will take a guess around 6 full cords. Will there be a prize in the spring? ;)

Hopefully the prize will be this winter with no lap use age, then I would win:)

I multiplied the 1200 gallons of lp by 91,333 btus(propane btu per gallon) and got 109000000 btus per year. Divide that by 137,000(btus per gallon of oil) and you get 785 gallons of oil equivalent. That is about $2800 per season for heating oil equivalent, Plus 4 tons of pellets. Your going to be no where near 6 full cords for a heating season. I don't know anyone heating with that little wood with a conventional stove. I still stand by my bare minimum of 10 cords.

I am still cutting on weekends, 12hr days during week pretty much stop cutting in evenings. 10 cords are pulp cords (8' length?) that would be 20-22 face cords, yikes a few more weekends coming.

Yes I think you have it. Around here a 'Cord' is a 4x4x8 stack or 128 cu feet of wood. 'Face Cords' which no one uses around here are 4x2x8 or 64 cu feet of wood.
