judds - Do you know if I could get by with 2 - 100# tanks to push my furnace?  My furnace is my only propane appliance so I don't want to over do it considering I might go years without burning any propane once I get my OWB setup this summer.  It will only be needed if the boiler fails and I need time to repair it.

Thanks for the info on that.  The legality issue of transporting larger tanks would be an issue I never thought of.

I do not know if two 100# tanks will run your furnace.  I'm pretty sure one tank wouldn't be enough, however.  It would be easy to buy two now and set them up and see if they work for you.  If they don't, it would be easy to add on one or two more.  The real test of if two are good enough is to have them both hooked up and FULL on a very cold day and try running your furnace.  That would be the worst case scenario for the smallest amount of vapor space and the slowest conversion from liquid to gas.

This thread has got me thinking and I might just go ahead and buy four 100# tanks to replace my 330 gallon rental tank.  I still have gas stove and will be adding a gas dryer.  I think my water heater will remain electric, however.

Wondering if anyone has an answer on the 100# tanks working. My propane company has decided to charge a $250 rental fee.

Propane companies are not always right.  I started to smell gas and called the gas company. They come out checked it and told me I was smelling smoke from the boiler. Long story short I called them again and told them to come get their tank. New company came out to install the new tank and found the leak right away. It was a underground connection. Then because of sour grapes the old company wanted to charge me for their tank removal. I got that resolved by telling them when their people reset the tank and  they didn't discount the line and broke it themselves creating a very unsafe condition. When I said unsafe condition conversation changed. I didn't have to pay for tank removal.

Merrill roofing, I see your from mid Michigan. I do know there is an Amish store in Clare Mi. that sells propane tanks and propane. My friend bought an upright tank around 225 gallon that works well for his furnace. So far I have not had to pay rent on my 500 gallon tank, but will head to Clare if they decide to charge me. Price was reasonable he said.
