Thermostat wiring help with Boiler and heat pump
« on: January 24, 2013, 06:19:56 PM »

I have a Bryant heat pump with the electric coil backup, and a heat exchanger in my duct work. I would like to get some opinions on the best way to wire the stat? Can I use 1 thermostat to control 3 stages of heat and my ac? 1st stage would be the fan only, 2nd stage heat pump, 3rd stage electric coils.
Or do I need to run two stats?

I'd just run 2 stats

I'll explain what i normally do

Install new thermostat directly beside old one

Take 2 10" pieces of thermostat wire

Jump from the r on the old to the r on the new thermostat

Jump from the G on the old thermostat to the W on the new thermostat

Turn old one off, turn the new one on, only the fan should run, be sure go make sure it's not back feeding and turning on the outside unit.  If it is turning the outside unit on, you can flip the breaker to it, or install a relay to keep that from happening..  I usually opt for the breaker

Hope this helps

If you want the wiring diagram for the relay, email me

Thanks for the quick reply, I currently have a 6wire stat. I would like to keep my current stat hooked up for backup in case my wood runs out.
C- 24vac common
R- 24vac power
O - changeover valve energized in cooling
G - fan relay
Y - compressor contactor
Aux - auxiliary heat relay
E - emergency heat relay jumped off of aux.

Yea, what I mentioned will work fine

Your old one will work as it always did, you'd just have to flip a breaker or use the relay if you were going away or wanted to use the heat pump

The thermostat I bought was just the same as the current one. It doesn't have a W.
What stat do you recommend for my boiler?

Could i just jump the R wire on the old stat to the R on the new one, the G wire on the old stat to the W on the new stat?
Set the old stat 10 degrees cooler than the boiler stat, would that work instead of using the relay?

Yea that will work as long as it doesn't turn the outside unit on...  Try it, and then go outside, while the new one is calling for heat, and if the outside unit is running, you'll either have to use the relay with that set up, or turn breaker off to the outside unit
