Pa Future OWB
« on: July 08, 2013, 10:31:56 AM »

Hello all, I'm looking into getting an OWB. I've not narrowed down the brand yet. I've looked through my great state regs about having a gasification boiler unit only. I've heard rumor of an exemption for units over 350,000 btu but can't seem to find it. Does anyone from Pa know if this exemption exists?  I would probably going over that number if it meant going with a traditional OWB.

Thanks for your help

I live in Indiana and we have that exact exemption.  I would start by looking on your Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Management website.  If you have to search, use the term "hydronic heating."  My state's terminology doesn't include words like "boiler" or "outdoor furnace."  It took me a while to find the language myself.  Good luck!

Good advice, don't be afraid to look at the EPA approved stoves though as most manufacturers have now worked out the bugs on their new stoves and as long as you take their advise on installation and operation you should not one of those people who do not feel good about their purchase, yes they are far more expensive and more maintenance they are far cleaner and do burn much less wood, even if you are cutting your wood from your own property, it is still not free.

Well of course I would like for you to buy ours but you are the guy buying and need to choose for yourself. There is a link to all approved boilers on the EPA website, Program partners

There aren't many companies with proven track records for EPA approved units.  Two of my favorites for EPA approved units is Empyre and Portage and Main

Thanks for the plug scott, why don't you add our units to your inventory, we do not have a problem with our dealers selling other products as well and I agree that the units you mentioned are both very good, one of the competitors that we had at fryburg last year was Empyre and he showed it running as well, did a nice job and I hope he is back this year.

I've considered it, it always seemed logistically tough, the higher price doesn't fit my market down here all that well.

I've talked to them many times tho and have hung out at the p and m booth and answered questions before in louisville

Nice, then if you were there this year you must have seen me, long haired, bearded extremely good looking guy running around trying to answer lots of questions. Have you been watching Oil futures prices, Crude Oil just went to 107 dollars per barrel this morning, get ready for a busy year, if something happens in the middle east the northeast of the US is in trouble and nobody on the news is even talking about it, 6 weeks ago if I remember correctly crude was at 86 dollars per barrel. In your PM you asked about the BL series, I do not know much about it as it is not EPA certified and I cannot sell it here in the northeast, it looks good and I like the fact that it is a sectional boiler, much easier to patch if it is ever needed. On another note we heard from the EPA yesterday regarding the new chip boiler, it is now EPA approved !!!!!!! :)

Thanks for the thoughts. I like simple that's why I didn't want a gasser. You know put wood in and it heats water. What are the best gassers out there?  I'm also interested in who stands behind there product the best. Any info would be great.

Thank you

I talked to our local DEP air quality rep today. He told me two things. Combination units that burn both coal and wood are seen as a wood only boiler and have to be phase two. Units that are over 350,000 btu are not covered by the regs due to them being considered commercial units.  He was going to check with his supervisor tomorrow and email all the information.  He said once I have that info I can purchase a unit over 350,000 and not have to be concerned with pulling it later.

Since I'm going to heat my new 40 x 48 x 16 pole barn and my house I was looking in this range anyways.

He also said they are currently having some people who broke the rules remove there OWB's " ouch".

Thanks
