Hey.. Want to find out my temp drop on my under ground lines.. I have no gauges  on the lines. If I get one of those none contact temp guns will it work alright for reading boiler inlet and outlet temps.. If I take a reading off the metal couplings that couple the pex to the hard piping.. Thanks for the help.

I bought one of the cheap infrared thermometers from Harbor Freight.  It works great inside, but I have a hard time getting accurate temps at the boiler.  I think it has something to do with the temp differential between my house and the outside temps.  The manual says to let the thermometer adjust to the temperature for 30 minutes to get a more accurate reading.  I tried this but I didn't see any difference.  Mine was reading that the inside temp was 40 deg. warmer that the temp at the boiler.

The non contact thermometers can be a little temperamental. Mine isn't a harbor freight one but I have found that if you have a piece of pipe insulation over the pipe outside and you peel it back and take a reading that it is very accurate. If you don't have your pipes insulated or they are exposed in the back of the OWB your numbers will be way off.

Just found out the same thing.. Boiler is at around 160 on the gauge... Reading 155 with none contact gun.. But only 120 on the exposed pipe coming out of boiler.

true 120 for a calloused old timers hand...you should be able to hold on to it (at least allmost) (at least for 20 or thirty seconds) if you can't its hotter
