Pump squealing, how long before dead?
« on: February 10, 2014, 05:50:44 PM »

I think my pump is a B&G nrf22.   It is 3-4 years old and is now squealing, not loud, but it is there.   I am gonna get a new pump ordered but how long do you think the old one will hang on?

There is no real answer on this. It could go out anytime or it could last you another few months.

It could be air trapped in it. I would try purging it just in case it might me. If you close and open a valve quickly a few times it sometimes will purge small pockets of air.

It could also be a small particle of dirt or rust in the impeller shaft, sometimes a good whack on the circ housing will dislodge it and you'll be fine, get a spare ASAP in any case.

One true sign a hydronic system is not working properly!   IT MAKES NOISE

Pumps should run quiet, if they don't there is a problem; dirt, air or mechanical. Hope the replacement gets there soon, and for warm weather

3-4 years is pretty good for the B&G pump I believe.  Mine lasted 2.5 years.

Thanks for the input guys . Once the wife ordered a new pump, the old one is now nice and quiet.  It will be good to have a spare on hand for when this one quits ;D
