Old pump for backup
« on: August 26, 2015, 09:07:28 AM »

I just received a new Grundfos 26-99 to replace the Taco 007 I have on my CB.  The Taco was a little undersized but got me through last winter.  I have no idea how old the Taco pump is as I inherited the stove used but, I plan on keeping the Taco as a backup.  Any tips/tricks to storing the pump after I take it off to make sure if I need it 5 years from now it wont be locked up or otherwise non-functioning?

I think you would want to clean out as much rust and junk from the pump and its volute as possible, and make sure the impellar spins freely.  Then maybe give all the exposed metal parts a good coating oil or other type of lubricant to prevent rust from forming; but becare of the plastic impellar -> don't think they are very fond of oils and what not.

What usually locks them up from sitting is the water evaporates and leaves the mineral behind. Getting all the water out should help. Then after a few months check to see you can still turn the impeller easily. If you apply power to run it, only let it run dry for a second or two.

You could take it apart and clean it up and put it back together. If there is any lime buildup you should be able to soak the parts in vinegar to remove it. Dry the parts off before re-assembling.

Could spray any metal parts with Fluid Film, we spray a lot of different stuff with it that handles 28% LAN and that stuff is about or more corrosive than battery acid, haven’t noticed any adverse effects to plastic yet that has been sprayed with Fluid Film.

Taco 007 should be a cartridge pump.  Buy a new cartridge and rebuild it, then put it on the shelf.

Unless you can get a cartridge cheap, you would be better off putting the money towards a spare 26-99 pump.

My CB is a 1996 model so I fully expect the grundfos to outlast the stove. I'll probably just take to 007 apart clean it up, spray it down with some fluid film and stick it on a shelf.
