Placement of heat exchanger

Hi, I'm new and in the process of building a OWF and had a question about the heat exchanger position in my down draft furnace. I have an electric down draft furnace and the heat strips are directly below the blower incased in a 12" x 12" duct. There is about 6" inches between the blower and the heat strips. A few inches below the heat strips the duct branches horizontally under the floor in two directions with no good place to put a heat exchanger. I want to know if I can put a heat exchanger above the main blower and it still be effective?
