Biomass Direct
« on: October 19, 2011, 07:41:10 PM »

New to site.  I have been looking for some time at purchasing an OWB.  I am leaning toward CB 5036 or possibly the E-classic equivalent. I stumbled on a company in Elizabethton, TN called Biomass Direct, LLC.  Is there anyone out there that has any experience with this product.  The videos on the site show what seems to be a well designed piece.  The kicker is they sell factory direct and it is a self install.  The rep. told me by phone that they have designed the unit to be very easy to self install.  I live in KY, about 250 miles away.  No local dealers.  Parts would come from Grainger.  They said I would get my parts quicker than going through a dealer, who would have to order the parts.  We all know how long the dealer has to wait on parts.  Just trying to find some information on this boiler.

My home is a Cape Cod, 5000 sq. ft., living room ceiling @ 30 ft. high (opens to upstairs bedrooms).  Currently, I have a Trane heat pump system that sucks the electricity during the winter.

Thanks for your help.

I am assuming that there is no one out there that has any experience or knowledge about Biomass Direct.

After reviewing the site there are two issues that turn me off about the furnace. Fiberglass insulation and roof top chimney. But that's just my opinion.

They change names quite often, the guy who runs that has been in all sorts of stuff.  I think they called them free heat machines for a couple years

What makes the fiberglass insulation and roof top chimney bad?  I can see that the rooftop chimney could cause leaking.
I see that you have a CB 5036.  How much are you heating (home and outbuildings) and approximately how many cords do you use in a heating season?  How often to you have to add wood.  I typically work 3 12 hour shifts a week, add 30 minutes for lunch and 1.5 hours of driving and you can see that I am away from my house for 14 hours a day at minimum when I work.  My concern would be that the fire would go out.  Would you see that as a problem?  It is not that I mind rebuilding the fire.

The better insulated your OWB, the less it will sweat in cold weather. You nailed my reason for the chimney.

We are heating 2700 sq ft, 19 year home, well insulated. Can't give you a usage total yet since this will be my first full season. I estimated 8 cords but have 13 if needed.

No problem about a 14 hour shift between refills. Fire won't go all the way out. You might be down to hot amber's when you get back. Enough to stoke the fire again.

I'm going on 24 hours since my initial start and haven't added any wood yet. The more I use it, the more I realize it's better to use the wood you put in the stove to do (and finish) it's job before adding more wood.

Yeah I don't think I would buy one because they use to own a company called free heat machines in jonesboro tn when warranty problems came about they closed doors then 2nd company with same looking boilers with new paint and name bio mass direct in elizabethton and now they offer the new Fischer wood boilers so better watch out they may drop bio direct next the have the same guys on YouTube for all the boilers and. I live prob 35 mins from elizabethton factory and I do not know of one single person who owns one I do know of a few people that had the free heat machine and  have horrible problems with them so you can decide if I was you I would check with Scott7m he is a Kentucky heatmaster ss dealer he prob closer than 250 miles. And you will get your parts just as quick from a good dealer like him as "factory direct" I got mine. From a dealer in south west va about. A 40 min drive he lots of stoves in stock but the color I wanted I had him order my color and. He had pipe fittings exchangers and support to help you though your install and. It only took 2 weeks to get my. Stove in I have a heatmaster ss mf 5000 ihave it up and running other than a fire in it because it's like 90 degrees here right now. I had a central boiler dealer down the road from me too. And know of some peole that have them and like them but choose the heatmaster dealer because of servIce the give there. Customers and that says a lot!

In regards to fiberglass, r30 is r 30 whether it's foam or not, it's also much more forgiving, let's say a weld has a tiny leak, under the foam it has the opportunity to do much more damage than if it were quickly noticeable.

Rooftop chimneys,  never had a problem with those either, the ones I carry have insulated chimneys that don't get hot, so the silicone easily seals around the pipe, I can see it would be a problem without an insulated chinney, but there are good and bad with all designs

[I put $4,000 down on a furnace with Larry at Free Heat and he said there was a delay in delivering then he closed the company and I didn't get my furnace and I didn't get my money back. Now I see him on Biomass Direct and Fisher Stoves videos. lasor1 you are right about Larry. Glad you didn't get taken by him like I did.
I posted this on another thread but thought people reading this should know what happened to me ]
