I'm new wondering what pump to get and how big?
« on: August 22, 2012, 07:19:15 AM »

I'm getting a owb  delivered soon wonder how big of a pump I'll need to go 100 feet on pretty level ground. The owb  only holds 90 gal. I'm just looking for best brand and what size, pretty much any insight would be great thanks.

I believe we would need more info.  The distance of your main line is not all that important; especially if it is flat.  Head hieght is and what you are driving it through is.  Any idea what all the heating components will be and what loop configuration you plan?  How high is the highest point?

For instance, my pool heat exchanger needs a fiar flow rate to operate efficeintly, so I had to get a much larger pump for that.  If you are runing multiple loops, you will need to keep the flow rate up in both loops.  Just some thoughts.

I hope this finds you already using your boiler. Just wanted to put this out there foe people. I have a single loop 10ft. High is my highest point. I have a bell and gossett pump. NRF-22. I am getting somewhere around 5 gal per min. So far it is working. My return line is warm so I am getting most of the heat out of my boiler. I am keeping my tank temp anywhere from 140 to 170.

More info is needed to get you the best pump for you.

If you'd like to call me to discuss the details of your system my number is below.  There are several questions I'd need to know and then show you some options.  Hope this helps

According to me the size of the pump depends upon the need and the comfort.

the distance from your boiler (along the pipes in your home) has as much or more too do with your pump than the elevation.  head pressure  on your pump is needed to be known to size your pump

this head pressure is determined by pressure and velocity and friction in the system,by length and size of pipe, what the pipe is made of, fittings in the lines and actually what liquid you are using.

some guy could sell you apump that he tells you will pump 20 gpm,, and you think great i only need 8. then you find the pump wont work for your application and wonder why. well, buddy sold you apump that would pump 20 gpm at 0 feet of head and it was a pump designed for high gpm delivery at low head pressure. after you figure out your system and you find you have 20 feet of head pressure you look up your punp and find  at 10 feet of head your 20 gpm pump can only move 6 gpm and at 20 feet of head it will move NONE

moral of story, know our head pressure before buyng your pump

I have started to use the new Grudfos Alpha head sensing circs on all my low volume installs, they are 3 speed, auto adjust when head or volume changes, they have a digital readout for gallons per minute flow rate and watts being used, great for diagnosing any system problems, not cheap but I really like them and so far no failures due to cavitation. I think they are around $180 retail

There are a lot of good pumps out there for under $100. Doesn't sound like you need anything fancy, a Taco 007 or a B&G NRF-22 is what I use a lot. They can be purchased online for about $85.

Hey slim jim the alphas are fine especially in zoning situations but check out the taco bumble bees.

Much better suited for a common loop system as they use temp sensors on supply and return and ramp up and slow down depending on depend and insuring delta t stays proper

Yea Scott I have seen them, they seem good but Taco burned me many years ago and I try to stick with the companies that have always treated me fairly.
