Using a Skuttle while running OWB???
« on: April 21, 2013, 08:21:10 AM »

Not sure if anyone knows what a skuttle is but its simply a 4 or 6 in damper that is mounted on the return plenum of a homes furnace to provide fresh makeup air throughout the house drawing fresh air from the outside. I know mine probably causes me to use more wood since when my blower on the furnace turns on I am mixing indoor 70 degree air with frigid outside air which probably takes quite a bit of heat off my plenum exchanger. Just wondering how many leave their makeup air duct hooked up while using the OWB?

That's one of the most important things a home can have.  In single and double wide manufactured homes they leak a lot anyway, but in tight homes indoor air quality is horrible if your not exchanging air all the time.

There is some standards on how much air should be new air brought into the home per your fine ranging 30-40%.   Does it cost more wood yes, but some wood isn't worth your health.

Having a drafty old farm house, I get way more fresh air exchange than I need, lol.
