It's cold outside!
« on: November 25, 2013, 03:49:05 AM »

So, yesterday our local news station said we had a steady wind of 20MPH.  A couple of the gusts reached nearly 50MPH couple that with tempos that struggled to hit the mid teens and it was a might chilly outside.  Last evening around 5:00pm I went outside to stoke up the OWB for the night.  When the wind didn't blow it was rather pleasant with the clear skies, crunching snow under foot, etc...but then the wind started up again and ruined everything.  I added 6 pieces at 24" long and mix of 6inch to 10in in diameter.  When I went outside to stoke it at 5:00am ( 8 degrees with a north breeze) this morning I was greeted with a nice pile of red hot coals.  After raking them flat and checking the air holes, I added another 6 pieces about the size I put in for over night to go the day.  But, I was toasty warm all day yesterday and when I got out of bed this morning.  How'd you folks make out with the chilly conditions of the past couple of days, especially you guys from NH or my neighbors in ME or VT?  Roger

Good morning Roger, I'm looking out my office window at the stack of the chip burner, there is a little moisture coming out of it because of the green chips, it's toasty inside the house, cold outside here in southern Maine, I can tell because when I let the dogs out they did not stay out long at all. I wish I didn't have to go out at all today but I have to bring my truck back to the Tranny shop AGAIN.

It was 10 yesterday morning and 8 this morning but at least the wind has died down. It sounds like I had the same wind speeds as you did yesterday.... it was a cold afernoon in my tree stand.

Last night I loaded the owb close to 3/4 full and it was ready for more this morning. When it's -20 I have to feed her a full load before work, a half load when I get home and another full load before bed..... she likes to eat!

I'm nowhere near your cold temps as you guys have out east, but we're pretty chilly for our climate here.  Had highs in the upper 20's and lows in the teens.  Having my first go a 12-hour load times.  The crazy thing is, I could still make it probably 18 hours with my stove and load.  But, the 18 hour make isn't feasible.  So, I load for 12 hour burns.  6 weeks into my first season and finally starting to get things figured out.  Had 4 showers in 1 morning this weekend and not a problem at all!  Lovin it!!

Man, if you have 4 showers in 1 morning, either you have more than one person taking turns at taking showers or you're one dirty fella.   ;)

Like you, I could easily go 18 to 20 hours on one fill but that too is not feasible so I put just enough in for 12 hours.

It was FREEEZING yesterday here in Central NH. We had the same 10-50 mph sustained winds with temps reaching about 21* for a high. Lost power at about 230 pm and got it back at 130am. Good work out on the old generator!

Thankfully we never lost power, although I was expecting it.  I think it flickered once (turned off my TV in the middle of a football game) but it never went out completely.

My younger bro went hunting yesterday morning and he said the wind was so strong that he thought he was going to be flung out of his tree stand.  He called it quits around 9:00am and then he decided to stay inside where it was warmer and safer.  Roger

Whats your local station? WMUR? Theres no way we had a steady wind of 20mph..The wind was wicked down my area with power outages ..Luckly I didn't loose it…..But I tell you what Id filled my boiler up at night and the next morning I  would have absolutely no wood in it..That arctic wind air makes your boiler work..I don't care what make, brand etc of owb it is.. Its gonna work..

On this side north facing mountain where I live it blew all day, no break whatsoever.  Perhaps the wind was steadier at a lesser speed but not much.  All I know is that it was dang cold.  I hear yah about that arctic wind and wood usage.  I don't care how tight the house is, air will get in with wind speeds that high.

Boy was it cold, that darn wind is something else. Lost power Saturday at 1030am and never got it back till Monday at 4 pm. GLAD I HAD THE GENERATOR. So windy it blew my grill over and across the lawn with a full LP tank in it.
Boiler kept the house at 70.

MattyNH - Is popular all you've ever heated your home with?

I have to buy my firewood, I get it log length.  My supplier has been really good to me.  He's always provided me with a mix of hardwood; e.i. oak, maple, rock maple, birch, beech, some ash.  He always guarantees an 11 cord load but for the past 2 seasons he's delivered 12 1/2 and 13 1/4 cord respectively.  Now that I'm 3 years ahead of myself, I won''t have to buy any in '14.

Due to medical problems, I'm going to see if 2 of my other brothers who heat with wood will go in 3rds for a wood processor.  Nothing fancy, something to take pressure off my neck and back.  I suffer from mild scoliosis and degenerative disk disease.

Roger- No the popular that Im burning is what I got for free.. I have to buy my firewood as well..I buy it log length as well..This yr was the highest that Ive ever paid for a grapple load (back in oct I bought for next yr).. I got a good mixture like you..All pole size wood….A wood processor is ideal..I wish I had one..Every time I go to the fairs, and look at them..I think man the work load is nothing….The tractor that I bought earlier this yr already helps me out big time, compared on how i has doing it before..(using atv and cart)..Im gonna buy forks for it this coming yr…That would be great if your brothers chip in to get one..They arnt cheap..But def worth it!
