White Oak?
« on: March 17, 2014, 06:58:29 AM »

I cut two trees this weekend that upon looking at the bark I thought was a red oak or a pin oak.  After cutting, the outer 1/3 of the wood was white and the inner 2/3 was pink.  Sap was coming up so the wood was really wet to the point that moisture actually sponged out from the splitting wedge.  It was really stringy like the red oak I split last summer.  But, it had a different smell.  Now that most of that saturated moisture is gone, all the wood is white now.  Almost as white as my ash wood.  I'm 99% positive it is oak from the fiber patterns.  But it's not red oak.

What do you guys think?  White oak?  I could snap some pictures tonight.

White oak can be stringy stuff.  It will be lighter in color than the red oak and it doesn't smell like cat piss like red does.  Pictures will help.

I am thinking it was red oak.  Red oak is white on the outside, pink in the middle and when it dries, it dries to mostly white.

In my personal opinion red oak smells more like fresh dog poop...

lol I think so too! I can't remember what type of wood I was burning about a month ago but it smelled like when you pee in the sauna.  Don't lie, I know all of you did that at least once as a kid haha!

Put a little bit in a tightly sealed ziplock bag and send it to Air Force POL, I bet he can distinguish what it is, anybody who has peed in a sauna did not do it just once and won't mind the smell, AFP, I have done some rough things in my life but never that, you could consider that bag of piss oak to be a trophy for admitting that one.

Ok. Pictures. The last picture is 100% red oak from last year. After looking over the internet, I'm leaning towards pin oak.

Maybe it is pin oak then? I don't have pin oak up here in NH..Too me is looks like a red oak..Ive had red oak smell funky due where they grew up..Its def not white oak for sure..Bark color and the inside wood is whiter to a brownish color..Wood you got is more towards a pink color..
