used stove leaky
« on: April 24, 2014, 07:37:50 PM »

So many of my posts have been about buying a new Ridgewood stove which I would love to do, how ever on their web site they have a used stove. How big of an issue is it to repair a leak I am in the trades and I know a few fitters who can ask to-do the repair  any info or past experience would be helpful.  Thanks guys

Depends where the leak is I'm thinking, and then how much are you saving by purchasing a leaking stove?

Well the stove I would like from Ridgewood is like 4k the used leaky one is 1200. If I could limp by a couple years or so I would be ok with that. I would much rather buy new, but not working full weeks is tuff on the bank account.

I understand do you know where the leak is located or is that not disclosed?

I bought a used owb without air testing it but I got lucky and had no leaks. You already know this one has a leak but I would want to know exactly where the leak is and if there is only 1. What if the whole weld job is bad and you put major hours into it and partway thru next winter it starts leaking again in another spot? Will you be able to keep water lines hot while you are doing "emergency repairs"?

Why is the current owner selling it and not repairing it, this may give you a clue as to rather it is worthwhile attempting a repair, great posts guys!

Everything you guys are saying is a good point. It's being sold by the guys from Ridgewood.   I had put an email into them last night. I wouldn't mind doing some repairs and putting some time into it. I just wish I had like 5 to 6 grand to do it right. Thanks guys

Consider this as well think it over real hard, it may be an easy fix if so then good if it comes back to a new leak in the winter its gonna be a nightmare! On top of that now you spent all that money put pipe in the ground and and install materials and if it were to start leaking again there you sit not burning wood but invested money to do so.

If they will not invest the effort to fix it, what makes you think it would be worthwhile for you to do it?

Don't you think IF it was an easy fix ridge would fix it themselves. Begs to question the ethics of a manufacturer selling any leaky stove.
Now if it was labeled as a parts stove or clearly listed as not worth using because of the detailed leak and pictured leak.

That would be my guess parts +weight for scrap is probably where they get the $1200 I would personally wait  until you have the money to do it right, and then you'll have your own warranty
