Baseboard Heaters on OWB system, question
« on: September 14, 2010, 07:37:31 PM »

I have a customer who has no duct work, but doesn't like the idea of an isolated shop-style heat exchanger.  I think that the baseboard system may be a great way for him to go, has anyone ever been in a home where the baseboards were run by an owb?  Has anyone ever installed a baseboard system?  If so what are some things to remember

You will need a lot of baseboard heaters to give off good heat. If you can get radiators it will work better. The problem with most homes with no duct systems is that they are often older homes that are hard to heat.
Is there a reason you don't want to put in a cheap little duct system. We do a lot of them for the low budget costumer. Buy a blower, throw a small return and filter. On the other end add a transition to a coil and 4 or 5 flex duct.  I'm doing one for a guy right now, I charged him $1200 for the duct system. I doubt a baseboard system  would be much less and a duct system is quick and easy.

i wasn't sure what a cheap duct system would cost.  I sell these plenum units themselves and they run around 600-900 and have the coil and fan in them.  I thought the baseboard system may be cheaper.

base boards are quiet and i think it can be done, but i would not know the cost. You would have to do a heat loss on the room, determine the amount of btu per hour you need and then see how many btu per foot your baseboard is delivering (its btu rating) and then you would know how many feet of baseboard and the cost you really need. ( i do think that the average baseboard heater on 180 degree water is about 550 or 600 btu per foot ) Depending where you live in North America yo ucould need anywhere from 30 to 50 btu per square foot.

a shed that is insulated as good as a new home (lets say 40 btu per sq. foot for average)
30 x 30 shed = 900 sq. feet x 40 btu =36000 btu
now devide that by your btu per foot of heater lets say again, for average, 600
36000 sq ft. divided by 600 btu per foot= 90 feet of baseboard heater.

this is not an accurate estimate, this is just to show you a ball park figure. Please contact a heating professional for accurate estimate

I guess it depends where you buy them at, a blower unit only costs around $300 and then you have a bit of sheet metal and the coil. I have a local HVAC guy who builds me the units. I drop off a coil and he builds it up for only about $50 labor so end up with a unit for about $550. Throw several hundred in flex duct and boots and the system might cost you a total of $750. I normally charge $1200 to $1500 depending on how much materials cost. This leaves about $500 profit for a days work plus you make whatever you normally do on a install job.
The baseboards will work, I have used them before. The problem I have had is it is hard to find enough wall space to fit enough in to make a good heat. If you use the baseboards let us know how they work. I would love to hear how it works out.

Good points.  Sounds like you have a good deal going on your fan assembly.  I may check with a local hvac guy to see if I could work something like that out.  Seems simple enough to do.

I have found the best HVAC guys to talk to are the smaller one man business. I found a guy who has a sheet metal shop behind his shop and he was happy to pick up a little extra work. All of the big companies I talked to didn't have the time to help me out.
