To all,

I have a customer that has a plenum size of 16 x 18. That's 100,000 btu and he needs about twice that. Is there anyone that makes a exchanger thicker then 3.5".

Has anyone ever mounted two exchanger one on top of the other. If so will this restrict the airflow to much as well as the water flow?

Do you have the room to install 2 into a A frame design?  Similiar to the A coil for AC in the system.  Double stacking 2 would create too much restriction.

Stacking them is a bad idea. It will screwup the airflow on the entire system and doesn't add that many BTU. If the air coming through the first heat exchanger is 140 degrees there is not much transfer happening on the 2nd exchanger.

I can get some that are 4-1/2" thick with 1/2" tubes instead of 3/8". I am not sure what the BTU ratings are compared to the standard size. If you are interested, let me know and I will check on it.

RSI I would be curious on the btu rating of a 18x18 and 16x18 if its not to much trouble!

I just looked up the BTU ratings and they are the same as the 3-1/2" models. I guess it is probably due to the 1/2" pipes being spaced farther apart than the 3/8" in the standard sizes.

I think the problem is that years back they installed a heating unit only half big enough to do his home, so the HVAC guys came back and installed a unit to do the job but did not increase the duct sizes to the correct size or a bigger size as needed. He said with the small unit the air flow was in adequate too. I figured they set the fan speed up to compensate for the are flow. What a shame a HVAC business would do this.

He has about 32" to install this in height. So I think I'm going to recommend he flare the duct to hold the bigger exchanger and then flare back down again. I have seen this done in some pictures before.

Has anyone ever done this before.

You could put a 16x22 in at an angle.

Making the plenum larger is probably best though.
