first mishap on bl28-40
« on: January 10, 2015, 08:43:35 AM »

Yesterday I opened the back door of my bl 28-40 the wind grabbed the door from my hand and ripped the top hinge off. Now I know it was my fault, but has anyone noticed how cheap the hinges are? Tell me if I am out of line, I can take it.

When I picked my unit up, my dealer told me to bury a couple fence posts just for that reason.             Door stoppers!!!  But, yes they are a little weak. Mine is blocked from the wind though.

I never let go of the back door while checking and when I fill I always prop my ash scoop or cleanout tool up against the front door

Outfit the cover doors with storm door hardware (door closer, safety chain & spring stop).

Something similar to this:

Absolutely Ijon.....they are CHEAP..  I too have had a few times when the wind has taken the door for a ride and Ive wondered how they did not break.  Looks like I should probably do something before Im left unhinged.

I am not bitching about the boiler because I love it. But i wondered if anyone else had trouble with the hinges.

My dealer gave me a back door hinge bracket, whether he fabricated it himself & painted it nice or P&M carries them.

It's made from thick channel steel, around 12" long, that mounts onto the two top bolts of the door, has a long rod that slips into this channel, then attached to the top hinge of the secondary heat exchanger door. As you open & close the door, the rod slides inside the metal channel & limits its swing.

Is that the same bracket as the new ones have on the front door if so I like the idea just don't like how they only open 90 degrees it just seems like it limits the firebox door, now on the back door I think it would be perfect since you don't need room to toss wood back there.

Sorry, I meant the front door. A person would think this same bracket hinge could be made to work for the back door.

If EPA hadn't messed with the OWBs, I'm sure P&M would have eventually installed these same hinges for the back doors of the BLs.

I didn't think of that. Since the BLs are built as two components, bottom half & top half, if we still could purchase these two replacement parts when need to, say, 15 years? (With the new upcoming epa laws).
