Yes it is strange that you are getting failed units. I bought mine off Ebay for $40 5 years ago and it had been on my old Hardy as the aquastat and now is on my oil boiler as the cut in aquastat if my OWB temp drops below 145. Works great still. How deep is your well that you are running it in? I made a well myself for my old Hardy that was about 6 inches long. I took a brass fitting that would screw into the port on the boiler and then took a piece of copper that the probe just barely fit inside of and soldered that to the brass fitting. The probe now is just zip tied to the incoming line to the FPHE and insulated with pipe insulation.
